Hey, i’m a catholic but i’ve been losing faith lately, i want to be close to God but i need help.
  1. Why aren’t dinosaurs mentioned in the bible?
  2. If God is so almighty then why did he have to rest on the 7th day?
  3. The bible says that God created the world in 7 days. How did they know how long a day was back when that person wrote the bible?
  4. Why would God take 6 days to create everything? Couldn’t he just snap his fingers and create everything in an instant?
  5. If God saved the Jews from Egypt (or was it palestine?) then why didn’t he save them in WWII?
  6. Why would God create people like Hitler and Pol Pot? To kill all his people?
  7. If the story of Noah did happen, isn’t God a murderer for killing all his people?
Please take your time to answer these questions.

  1. Well, it’s not like the ancients back then even knew what dem bones were. Of course, certain saaaad varieties of Christians will dismiss it as “DINOSAURS WERE NEVER REAL, SATAN PLANTED FAKE BONES”…
  2. I’d say a rest is in order after a job well done.
  3. We’ve been able to tell time and track days for a veeeeery long time now.
  4. Eh… Things don’t just poof into existence. See my signature? That’s what I mean by that. Think of an artist. They don’t poof a painting into existence. They choose a canvas, paints, blend the paints for the right shade, etc. I don’t see God just POOFING everything into existence, it took time to make something flawless.
Heck, the plagues of egypt weren’t poofed, there’s scientific explanations for each of them, and none of said scientific explanations take God out of the process.
  5. Hellloooooo big can of worms I’m not going to open. Yeah, I think I’ll leave the more serious thread responses to handle this. It’s late, and my brains not up to type a large essay.
  6. Not like God made them that way, but what happens will happen.
  7. … No.

The Book of Genesis is an aetiological story that explains why God made us. It is not intended to be science.
  1. If God is so almighty then why did he have to rest on the 7th day?
Again, this is not literal.
  1. The bible says that God created the world in 7 days. How did they know how long a day was back when that person wrote the bible?
I think a correct translation of the Hebrew would be more like seven “periods of time”.
  1. Why would God take 6 days to create everything? Couldn’t he just snap his fingers and create everything in an instant?
Yes but the world is teleological, its workings constitute a journey, a process. This journey was a new concept in the ancient world which saw everything as cyclical, hence Stone Henge in Britain, the Omicron in the East, etc.
  1. If God saved the Jews from Egypt (or was it palestine?) then why didn’t he save them in WWII?
He did, they’re still here aren’t they?

Look at the stories of the Old Testament. They are stories of God’s promise (covenant) and man’s betrayal of that promise. When the Israelites start getting things wrong, God send a prophet to explain stuff to them, if they don’t sort themselves out, they end up getting slaughtered, by the Canaanites, the Assyrians or the Babylonians.

God doesn’t want them to be slaughtered, He wants them to stick to the Covenant, because that is what will keep them safe, but they get arrogant and think they can do it without God. That’s kind of like all of us really.
  1. Why would God create people like Hitler and Pol Pot? To kill all his people?
He didn’t. He created perfect human beings who chose to sin.
  1. If the story of Noah did happen, isn’t God a murderer for killing all his people?
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord.

Job 1:21

also on top of what the others have said the Lord is Love meaning if God took life he did it for a good reason, it is his life and if he decides time is up then it is. It also means that God must have brought a greater good out of it, like the restoration of the Human race or to teach us just how evil we can be if we lose sight of Him.

  1. You might as well ask why wheelbarrows aren’t mentioned in the Bible. In Genesis, God is said to have created all the birds of the air, and the ‘creeping things’ which creep upon the Earth. This is not a comprehensive list ;), but a demonstrative, encompassing statement from the animals high in the sky to those closest to the ground. Dinosaurs may be included in this, just as wheelbarrows might be included when someone says “cart” or “wheel”, or whatever the case is. “Trinitas” is not in the Bible, but “Father/Son/Holy Spirit” is in the Bible; likewise, “dinosaur” is not in the Bible, but “animals which creep upon the Earth” is in the Bible. Don’t look at the Holy Scriptures like a literal list!
  2. “Rest” is a characteristic Biblical term that means “doing nothing”. It is a state of having completed work. The original language is much clearer on this than English could ever be. Perhaps the better translation might be “On the seventh day, God stopped”. 😃
  3. Human beings have been using modes of astronomic science for thousands and thousands of years. The length of a day was calculated long ago by a myriad of people, not just Jews. Anyway, God could have created everything in six days, then put our first parents into the Garden of Eden without time passing there (since paradise = eternity). For all we know, Adam and Eve lived 90 trillion years in Eden before the Fall - The Bible says that Adam’s “days” were numbered 930, but this could be after the Expulsion.
  4. Well, why not create it in 6 days? It’s evident that our Lord likes to create hierarchies, and enjoys seeing things play out in time. This is the way He made the Universe. God appears to take great joy from structures, systems, and overlapping generations. Everything is a grand symphonic texture, in crescendo and decrescendo until the final cadence is reached… and what a great dominant-tonic relation that day will be! JUST IMAGINE the G-D-F-B → C-C-E-C fortissimo chords that will result when Christ our Lord comes and the tension is released!
Jesus could have just made all men in Heaven, and taken away free will. That’s not how God works, obviously, because we’re not automatons. 🙂 True happiness comes from suffering and learning after mistakes, and the ability to make mistakes indicates the existence of free will. Thanks be to God: He gave us the best possible way to true joy.
  1. It may sound cruel, but God doesn’t need the Jews anymore. They were a chosen people because of God’s total, sheer plan for humanity. God wanted to bring up a people who were stable, living in a system that worked and did not fail. He did this so credibility could be built up over time, so hints could bubble up from ancient lakes and battlefields. Our Lord gave Israel a special ‘boost’ of lineage because there had to be one solid line from the Beginning down to Christ, so people would believe Christ is at least credible.
God’s use of Israel as one line shows supreme wisdom and knowledge of human fallibility. He knows what it takes for human beings to believe that someone is genuine. Part of this genuineness is being pre-announced by kings; so, God made the whole history of one nation a pre-announcement of Christ, to give Christ some prior credibility in fulfilling the Plan. As Jesus has now come and assumed human flesh (amazing!), the Jewish centrality has been fulfilled. It’s not to say that God hates the Jews now, or something, but they’re just any other people - “Israel” is now the Holy Church of Christ.
  1. God never creates a subject in natural opposition to its own proper object. God created Hitler good, and Pol Pot good, and Stalin good. Every single thing God makes is good; individual cancer cells are ‘good’, philosophically speaking, because God made them. All material and existence is good. It’s the way we make choices and live that makes moral decisions bad. Hitler is just individual humanity writ large, in my opinion. Imagine any person or group of people you really dislike or even hate… can you really say you wouldn’t like to see some harm brought to them in your hastiness? Hitler’s sickness is our own…
  2. God sees a life and reality beyond this one. When God kills a man on Earth, remember that it isn’t the end of life. He may have preserved those that weren’t “all that bad” before the Flood; then again, perhaps we might just trust Him when He said the whole world had become wicked and sinful. Who really cares if God strikes down X or Y? I’d be pretty honoured if God actually decided to kill me HIMSELF, when He might just use human instruments to do so. There is life beyond this life… to say “God is a murderer” is to miss the fact that He might have ushered those dead people into something even greater beyond physical life.
Please strive forward, and remember that for every stupid objection there is a sensible, calm, rational answer in faith.
