If what God does disappoints us, it’s because of lack of knowledge/understanding or some other defect on our part (preferring our immediate gratification over the truly good or somesuch).
As for God taking and giving stuff to us - see Job. Yes, He does, but not arbitrarily (and we must remember that all things are His anyway, and really only ours for the use of).
I am not sure it is accurate to think of God as holding things against us or crediting us for good deeds in the sense of good things are +1 bad things are -1, and you have to hit a certain score to get into heaven. But bad things do offend God and damage our relationship with Him, and such damage should be repaired. Likewise, good things strengthen our relationship with God and help sculpt us into the type of person that would even want to join Him in heaven once we die and see what that actually means (and, of course, in some cases not doing a good thing is a bad thing and damages the relationship. “For what I have done and what I have failed to do” sort of thing).
