I have become increasingly interested about learning in the Roman Catholic faith. I have been a faithful Roman Catholic my entire life, but recently I have become more interested in learning. I have a few questions, and I want them to be answered from the Roman Catholic perspective please.
  1. On some websites I have looked at it says there are seven “princes” of heaven, and that they are the seven archangels. On others it says that the Roman Catholic church only recognizes three: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. So here’s the first question: Are they other four, like Uriel, recognized by Roman Catholics as true and are they really seven “princes” of heaven?
  2. In contrast to the seven princes of heaven, there are supposedly seven princes of hell. Are they real? And if so, how are Satan and Lucifer two different princes?
  3. Last Question: On the pages where it spoke of the seven princes of hell, it said that each of them represented one of the deadly sins, like gluttony sloth and all that. Is that true? And if it is, what does the seven princes of heaven represent if anything?
I would appreciate if anyone answered this, as I want to learn the faith but it’s hard to tell online what is true and what is not with all the evil in the world and that different religions often combine online. Thanks!

Are you aware 7 is representation of “all” or “universe” so seven princes of Heaven could represent all in Heaven same for hell, same for the seven snakes or serpents etc……

Hope that helps

I suggest you read this article.

Only Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel are mentioned by name in Scripture. So, names ascribed to others are only pious traditions.

I believe much of what you’ve read are pious legends and traditions (which doesn’t mean they are bad). But, these are not actual Church teaching on angels.

It is easy to learn exactly what the Church teaches if you stick to official documents and publications. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is available in complete form online, and it is the definitive compilation of essential Church teachings. The Catechism is based upon, and frequently refers to, documents promulgated by Popes and the Holy See throughout the ages. These documents are archived in various places on the net, including EWTN and the Vatican’s own website. The Catholic Encyclopedia, linked in the post above, is also a good document of Church terms, albeit outdated when it comes to Vatican II reforms and the 1983 Code of Canon Law.

God bless you in your search for the truth.
