Let me start off by saying that I am a young adult and have never been heavily religious, more spiritual. I got my first communion, and I am not sure why but maybe because I was at such a young age I stopped there. This does not have much to do with the big picture I am getting at though but I thought it may provide some sort of insight because I am very new to this.

I recently joined a youth group but have not been participating very much because I am also a busy college student working part time. I have always been Catholic, never really questioned my faith much, but I guess not practicing and definitely a good amount of sinning.

Anyways, I come to you all to ask a question about Satan because I have been in a very dark place this year. I am struggling a lot. It is rather personal so I do not want to really get into details but my mom has hit rock bottom and my dad has never been a good guy. It is probably the hardest time I have ever had and I am just starting to face it.

The other night though I was driving home from my cousins house and I have an FM transmitter to listen to my iPod through the radio, I hope you may be familiar with the technology, and I must have hit the wrong button and it changed the station. There was a lot of static but I could make out two radio announcers debating Facebook. All of a sudden something terrifying happened. The voices got very deep and low then began to get distorted and it sounded almost as if I was playing a song backwards and it was a demonic voice. This all happened very quickly, and I turned the radio off immediately because I was so scared.

Ever since then I have been trying to forget it, but have found myself in a kind of weird funk and didn’t want to say anything to anybody because I thought they may think I am crazy. But I have been really sad since then and I thought maybe ignoring it is the wrong thing to do, and I should use this to my advantage and start appreciating God more.

I thought maybe because the announcers were talking about Facebook, that the demonic voices happened to tell me that Facebook is evil. I really have no idea though, I am so frightened by it though that I even convinced myself that it was all in my head.

But after reading some of these other posters, I feel as though it was Satan or one of his demons trying to break me down because I have been in such a difficult place and he was trying to get to me at my weakest point. Most notably, I have been sinning without confession.

So please, I would like to know what you think and I would also like to know what to do to overcome this. I am scared, and I would NEVER denounce my faith, but I am still frightened by having any kind of experience with the devil.

  1. I don’t think that anybody can clarify for you whether what you experienced was indeed an encounter with Satan - just as nobody can clarify whether a man is in mortal sin. What I would say, is that Satan tends to works by tempting us, and causing us to have doubt in things… particularly in God. You’ll have to ask yourself: how did this experience make me feel?
It might be the case that you were merely scared; either way, I think it’s quite a stretch of the imagination to imagine that Facebook is evil [quite a stretch of the imagination].
  1. As regards Confession: Confession is properly the sacrament for disclosing mortal sin: if you are not aware of any subjective mortal sin, you’re not strictly speaking required to attend the Sacrament (except once a year: although of course, most people probably frequent it far often, to help encourage their relationship with God).
In order to overcome this: read Holy Scripture; go to Church and take Holy Communion (presuming you’re not aware of any mortal sins); and start praying: the Our Father; Hail Mary; and Glory Be is my preferred ‘Three Prayers’… I think they work a treat. Also, if you’re really concerned about Satan, ask God in a prayer to remove Satan and all temptations and doubts. Hope that helps 🙂

My friend I have an iTrip like that and messing up the stations can get you what’s called “bleed over” from powerful stations on adjoining frequencies, so it could have been that.

However, it is possible that what you heard was what you fear. There is no way to tell for sure. I wasn’t there…🤷

I realize that things are pretty messed up for you right now and that you aren’t really strong in your faith…but that can change…and that can change things for your folks as well.

My suggestion? Go to confession as a start. It won’t kill you and the church won’t cave in on ya, and Father has heard as bad or worse than you will confess, okay? 🙂

Then…let’s just say it’s time to begin getting into your faith. Begin going to Mass every Sunday…no excuses, or Saturday evening vigil Mass if you have to work or something. Catch daily Mass when you can. I suspect that you’ll fall in love with that like I have because it’s powerful.

Please feel free to PM me if I can pray (more) for you or counsel you in any way.

Believe me, I’ve been where you are and worse and our most holy faith ROCKS at setting lives right. I’ll be prayin’ for ya. Count on that. 👍

Thank you both tremendously for being so welcoming and helpful, I honestly already feel 100% better. I certainly considered that the adjoining frequencies was the reason for it as well, I had just never heard anything like it before.

Regardless I will definitely be taking your advice because no matter what I heard, even if it was nothing, which I hope was the case, it clearly affected and scared me enough not to ignore.

My experience is that Satan doesn’t exactly want to scare us off. That would be counter-productive. I wouldn’t read into it too much. If Satan wanted to tempt you, he wouldn’t go about it by putting the fear of God into you.

And don’t worry about Facebook being evil. It’s just a tool that can be used for either good or evil. Like knives, nobody is going to say they’re evil. It’s pretty hard to cook without them. That being said, some pretty evil things can be done with a knife too. The evil is in the wielder, not the tool.

Well, if you need anything else, you know where to find me.

Hang in there. I’ll be praying for ya. 👍

Dear one,
I am sorry that you are in a troubled place. You are in my prayers.

I bolded some things in your post in order to say this - and please don’t take this as an attack on you…In fact I’ve been where you are…
You say at the end that you would never denounce your faith, and yet you have been doing just that. Look at the bolded sections. You are not practicing your faith (not attending mass?), sinning without going to confession etc. This is precisely what has been weakening you.

I don’t think that what you heard was particulalry “demonic”. From a spiritual standpoint it was more likely a call from God for you to return to the sacraments - To wake you up - To challenge you. Your response is a good one. You are seeking council.

My advice, like the others, is to get to confession. Since it has been so long, perhaps make an appointment so that you don’t feel rushed, but in any case hurry to confession and then, as soon as you are able get to mass and the Eucharist. Take Our Dear Lord, body blood soul and divinity, into your body. Feel Him enter you and ask Him to possess you and give you strength.
Once you do this you will feel a great weight lifted from you. Then pray for guidance, courage and perseverance. Spendd time in prayer every day. Spend time before the tabernacle or if there is an adoration chapel, go there.
Remember that if you are too busy to pray - - your too busy.

Good luck and let us know how things go…

Peace
James

Yes, pray much and get to confession! That is the real issue here.

May the Lord be with you on your journey!

Thank you all again! 🙂 You have a lot of insight and I am so happy you are sharing them with me.

I am going to Sat night vigil mass in a little less than an hour. Really looking forward to it! Especially because before my grandmother passed away she used to attend the church I am going to.

PS. James - I definitely did not take that as an attack, and you are absolutely right!

That great my friend!

So…how’d it go, and what’s up now?

Hey there. Do not worry it was only some kind of interference. Not satan. However i understand your feeling. I sometimes question my faith. Im at uni and often dont have time to pray or go to church. And yes i am a sinner and i would definitely do with a refurbishment of my faith. Why not try living your faith? I believe that even if you dont go to church you can celebrate gods name through random acts of kindness, through thankfulness for every little success in your day. Talk to god everytime you fear the evil or are uncertain of what to do. He will comfort you and before you know you will have the right answer given to you…thats just how he rules…i love you god:)

We need to pray and be on guard always. Nothing compares to the gifts of the Mass, Eucharist, and Sacrament of Reconciliation. We need to accept those gifts! That is how we grow in His strength and peace.
