Detroit Sue:
I’m only on a short break, so I’ll just address this one.

All you need to do to become Catholic in good standing again is to believe and accept the Tenets of the Church and go to Confession.

As we believe that at the moment of Consecration the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, we cannot disrespect Him by distributing His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity to non-believers. Also, people aware of grave sin who have not received absolution are prohibited from receiving the Eucharist. It’s not meant to ex clude, but to in clude all who believe.
I’m not on this board to become Catholic again, I only came for some answers to questions and that was it…

As far as being a non-believer…I understand to not allow non-Christians to not sharing in the breaking of bread but to say that someone who believes in Christ is not allowed to receive it is absurd.

Also as far as Baptism goes
Teach all nations, baptizing them" Teaching or preaching must precede baptism. See Acts 2:41.

Eunuch, “What doth hinder me to be baptized?” Philip, “If Thou believest with all thine heart.” Believing is a prerequisite of baptism. See Mark 16:16.

“Repent and be baptized everyone of you.” Repentance must precede baptism. See Luke 24:47

A child should be old enough to receive teaching, believe, and repent of sin before being baptized.
Dedicating children to God and asking Him to bless them is Biblical. This Jesus did in Luke 18: 15-17, Matthew 19: 13-15. T

Every New Testament church was formed by those whom were baptized after believing and repenting.
Galatians 3:27 and 1 Corinthians 12:13.

CHURCH AT JERUSALEM 3000 WERE BAPTIZED Acts 2:41
2. CHURCH AT SAMARIA Believed & were baptized, men & women. Acts 8:12-16
3. CHURCH AT CAESAREA Peter commanded them to be baptized Acts 10:48
4. CHURCH AT PHILLIPPI Lydia & the Phillippian jailer baptized Acts 16:14-33
5. CHURCH AT CORINTH Believed and were baptized Acts 18:8
6. CHURCH AT EPHESUS Paul rebaptizes certain disciples Acts 19:1-6
7. CHURCH AT GALATIA Believed Paul and baptized into Christ Gal. 3:27
8. CHURCH AT COLOSSE They were buried with Christ in Baptism Col. 2:12
9. CHURCH AT ROME They died to sin, then buried in baptism Romans 6:1-4

As far as Confession goes, we are called to confess our sins to God alone (this is proven in the Old Testament and reconfirmed in the new). Now because God is holy and we are sinners, we need a mediator to bring us past the barriers between us and Christ is that mediator. He is a High-Priest who has not passed away and who is perfect. We are told in the Bible that he is a Priest forever, why should I look to a Priest here who is man and still sins, when I can have a perfect Priest at God’s right hand, who DOES have the power to make all well?

“James bids us “confess our faults to one another,” but he says nothing about confessing to ministers. Above all, there is not a single example in the Bible of any one confessing to a minister and receiving absolution. We see the Apostles often declaring plainly the way of forgiveness, and pointing men to Christ. But we nowhere find them telling men to confess to them, and offering to absolve them after confession.” (J. C. Ryle)

Also, I am highly offended when someone tells me I don’t have proper access to interpreting the Word of God. I understand that there are things I will get wrong and things I probably will never understand but to say that I cannot read it and make decisions on how to allow God to use me and better me is ridiculous.

Fourth, show me where Christ institutionalizes a specific Church…
Matthew 16:18. Also, in 1Timothy 3:15 St. Paul writes about “the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.” Is there any other Church than the Roman Catholic Church that teaches it was founded by Christ, is the pillar and foundation of truth and has been around for about 2000 years? If you deny that the Catholic Church is the Church instituded by Christ then please refer us to other churches that make the same claim and have been around for about 2000 years. If you agree that the Roman Catholic Church is the one instituted by Christ but say that it has been corrupted and is no longer the true Church then you would contradict what Our Lord said in Matthew 16:18 (“the gates of hell will not prevail against it”).

I know that there is no desire for malice in your words…if I thought there was, I wouldn’t respond to your post but…
On your first point, I am Protestant. Technically due to the fact that I received the Sacraments, I guess I am a unique case…however, when at my cousin’s first Communion (as I will attend family events believing that we are unified in Christ as Savior whether we are Catholic or Protestant) it was instructed that anyone cannot partake of the Sacraments unless they are an active participant of the Catholic Church. To me that sounds like I am no longer Catholic…
No one is to take communion if they don’t accept the full doctrine of the faith. By recieving the Eucharist you are confessing the faith of the Church and you are declaring that you are in full union with the Church. There are many people who go against this and recieve anyway. They recieve their condemnation because they take the Eucharist lightly.
Second, I will answer what I meant by whole-heartedly. In the Bible when asked by someone what the greatest commandment was, Jesus replied, “love the God with all your mind, heart and soul (directly Greek word for the soul is both body and spirit).” This is what I meant when I said whole-heartedly. I accept Christ as the one true head of the Church. I accept His words and His teachings. I love Him with my whole being. I try to continually pray to Him, I try to help others see that He is the one true way to God, I live my life for Him helping in the community around me in various ways. Whole-heartedly means basically I live my life for Christ and follow Him.
It is Christs desire that we be a complete member of His Church.
Third, I indeed have a personal relationship with Him. Admittedly, due to man being fallible and finite; there are many differences with various denominations. Show me where Christ says specifically to pray to a Priest who will absolve you of sins…I don’t reject Baptism (accept in the fact that Baptism does not grant Salvation as belief in Christ does that), I don’t reject the power of the Holy Spirit, I don’t reject communion (Christ says at the table, do this IN REMEMBERANCE OF ME; clearly that should be taken as symbolic), I don’t reject forgiveness of sins (except that I don’t believe a Priest has the power to talk for God as our sins have been spoken for by God), I believe in annointing of sick.
Christ specifically tells the apostles whose sins you forgive are forgiven and whose sins you retain are retained in John20.

The verse refering to communion in no way means symbolic. To do it in remembrance is to bring the whole event to the present. In the Jewish tradition the did the passover in remembrance of the first passover. It was not a symbol, they were actually participating in that first passover with Moses and his people. The Eucharist is the same, we are participating in the first Eucharist which Christ celebrated. This is in actuality. It is not a symbol, it is in truth. We celebrate the Eucharist every week in rememberance of Christ.

Christ would disagree with you regarding the priest and confession. Christ specifically tells the apostles in John20 whose ever sins you forgive they are forgiven whose ever you retain they are retained. This is right after He says recieve the Holy Spirit.
I agree that Christ says there is ONE TRUTH. However, that truth is simple…Christ is the one ONLY way to God but the Catholic Church isn’t the only way to Christ. To say that various things in the Churches have changed is true but you cannot call the Church perfect as throughout the years it has been influenced by the words and deeds of man…both the Catholic and Protestant Church had this happen.
Christ established one Church and that is the Catholic Church. In Matt18 Christ tells the apostles that if anyone does not recieve the Church they shall be as a heathen and a publican. He is talking about the Church making a decision in a tough situation. We are to listen to the Church. It sounds like there is one Church and it has authority. Paul tells Timothy that the Church is the pillar and ground of truth. He sounds like he is talking about a physical structure.
I am not saying that what I believe is 100% accurate; I am saying Biblically (from the King James Bible), I read and live life according to that…SCRIPTURE.
Paul exhorts the people to hold the traditions handed down by both word of mouth and by epistle. Scripture is not the only thing we are bound by, we are bound by union with the Church.

Believe. There is that word again. I’m still waiting for an explation from jpete of what it means theologically (and not as used in the common vernacular). Are there any prerequisites? Are there any post-belief obligations or requirements?

Fourth, show me where Christ institutionalizes a specific Church…He says before His ascension that He will leave the gift of the Spirit. Paul himself in a letter wrote about differences in followers under different leaders, who should we follow Timothy are Barnabus? Paul responds that we should follow the one true Savior…CHRIST and should not argue about the little things.
That is in one of the Corinthians I think. Paul is talking about those who say I am of Peter or I am of Paul or I am of Barnabas. They are all of Christ so there should be no dispute. You should brag on Christ. This does not affect the point. Paul also warns the people about the false Christians and the Judaizers. There was a specific teaching that Paul and the other apostles taught. Those who strayed from that teaching were warned against.

Christ mentions one Church in Matt18. This can not be understood as being just a body of believers. This Church actually has authority. In Pauls epistle to Timothy chapter 2 he mentions that the Church is the pillar and ground of truth. He is talking about a body with authority that can handle disputes.
If you want I can reference every argument of mine straight with Scripture from various source Bibles (whether directly translated from Greek or King James, etc)…please I ask that you reference Biblical references as the Word of God is truth.
There are several references above.

i dont have much time but i just wanted to give you all some random thoughts… ok

#1) Even the Pope goes to confession, actually once a week to show his humility.

#2) In the Bible Christ gives the power to his disciples to forgive sins. Like someone else said when you go to confession its like your talking to Christ himself. Even the priest will tell you that God himself absolves you. (Peter was the first Pope)

#3)The Catholic faith is not about Scripture alone. There are reasons for this but right now i am sorry i do not have time to go throught them.

#4) As Catholics we cant force you to believe, but we can teach to you the truth. As Fr.Corapi says if we are to love each other we want the highest and best things for them which is heaven. I love you my brother and I pray that you someday will come back to the Church. may God Bless you this Christmas and forever. In Christ, Matt

  1. CHURCH AT EPHESUS Paul rebaptizes certain disciples Acts 19:1-6
I don’t have time to go through all your quotes but this one jumped out at me. Paul rebaptized those who recieve the baptism of John the baptist. Johns baptism was not the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It gave no salvation. This was not a rebaptism of the Holy Spirit. As these people said they had never even heard of the Holy Spirit. Christ commanded His apostles to baptize in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church would baptize them again as well considering that they were not baptized in the baptism which Christ instituted.

This is something that I found online that I read awhile ago (in published form)…I would like you all to please read it and tell me what you think. It talks about various doctrine in comparison to Scripture. Anyways, I had my questions and got my answers…So thank all of you for responding.

Jack Chick is a person of overt and vicious anti-Catholic bias. He uses untruths to prove things about the Church that is not true.

For instance, in the first paragraph he inaccurately describes the sacrificial practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays. He then uses this innaccurate description to infer additional untruths.

This is your source? You will know false prophets by their fruits. He uses lies to prove lies.

Thank you for the link. Like many things written by people with an agenda, it sets up a false premise and then blows it away. This is called destroying strawmen–a common hobby, it seems, of some anti-Catholics. I read nothing I haven’t read before. The same old misconceptions put forward as truth or things omitted that might explain what the Church actually teaches. The only good thing in the article is the author recommending his readers look into the Catechism for themselves. Let’s hope they do so without the bias imposed on it by this person. I challenge anyone to read the Catechism with an open mind and still come away declaring the Catholic Church is not the Church founded by Christ through which salvation is brought to the world.

Jack Chick is one of the most anti-Catholic and dishonest men. He really liked to conjure up stories about the Catholic Church. Nothing he says should be trusted.

I’ll agree that this has an anti-Catholic ring to it and I didn’t want to come back accusatory and apologize if I did.

As far as beliefs on Churches, like I said before; the true Church of Christ are the believers of Him. Whether Catholic or Baptist or Reformed, etc. Belief being something that is whole-hearted and true and proven through the life-styles and actions of a person and that is what is a prerequisite for Salvation, BELIEVING Christ. Living for Him and being a modern-day apostle.

We are told in Hebrews that there is but ONE mediator between us and God and that is Jesus Christ, we are also told that he is a living High-Priest, last we are told that He sits at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us (meaning that it is He who brings our sins to God for forgiveness not a Priest here).

We are told to love God and to follow Him in the Gospels. Scripture tells us to analyze anything that is said with SCRIPTURE.
Again in the Bible I don’t see infant Baptism but older people who knowingly choose that they want in on God’s family. When someone asked Simon (the first Pope) if they could purchase the Holy Spirit, Simon turned them away and said repent your sins to God for forgiveness; he did NOT take it upon himself to absolve the sins of that person. 1 John talks about how confession is made and Christ absolves us of sin…

I didn’t get into transubstantiation before but to think that we are actually eating and drinking the Saviors body and blood is grotesque and against the Law in which God gave Moses.

Whether you have ties that go directly to Paul is meaningless to me as I don’t need 2000 years of man’s traditions to know Christ. All I have I need in Scripture and Word. I am told that I have been redeemed by BELIEVING IN GOD and knowing the true only way to Him is through Christ Jesus. I don’t need 2000 years of a Church saying that I don’t have access to God as the Bible says.

Christ was against tradition not for it…

I am actually going to drop out of this discussion now, as I came here for answers and to seek out truth more indepthly…not to argue and debate points harshly which is what has happened and for that I apologize.

However, it is said in the Bible that Scripture is truth and there are stern warnings about tradition and about adding to the truth. I feel that many traditions in the Catholic Church are unfounded by Scripture and are adding rules which is something I don’t agree with.

Actually, you don’t have a clue what you are talking about. None of your accusations (actually those of your adopted church) are true. What I find so sad is that you won’t even look into it for yourself nor question whether or not your Protestant church is right, you just accept that it is.

Why didn’t you look into the teachings of the Church before abandoning it for what others, who have no understanding of the Church or love for it either, told you. If you didn’t talk to your priest or read any Catholic resources, but just left on a “feeling” you cannot know anything at all. This is a great pity and frankly not worthy of anyone who claims to want to know the truth. 😦

If you drop out of this thread, I invite you to hang around these forums for a while anyway and check out the tracts on the home page. It sounds like your understanding and the Catholic understanding are perhaps very different, which seldom makes for easy flawless inoffensive discussions. There are many many good people here with whom you can ask questions, pose problems and just discuss things that interest you.

If I could pose a recomendation: I believe you will have the best luck in discussion if you pick a specific topic for a thread and we all stick to that specific topic. It is very difficult to cover a wide range of questions in one sitting so to speak.

I would also ask you to consider what if any information in this thread you have discovered that may have a ring of truth to it, for you will find many many more things here on this site which will also cause that reaction. But we need to go slowly and consider each point carefully.

Peace,
Chris W

I didn’t see anyone being harsh on either side. You came for info, and received it from the Catholic perspective. I think all were charitable in answering.

Please explain John 6:55-68 then. From Scott Hahn’s conversion story (as found at chnetwork.org/scotthconv.htm):

"I had been trained to interpret that in a figurative sense;
Jesus is using a symbol. Flesh and blood really is just a symbol of His body and blood. But the more I studied, the more I realized that that interpretation makes no sense at all. Why? Because as soon as all the Jews hear what Jesus says, they depart. Up until this point, thousands were following him, and then all of a sudden the multitudes just simply are shocked that He says, “My flesh is food indeed, my blood is drink indeed” and they all depart. Thousands of disciples leave Him. If Jesus had intended that language to only be figurative, He would have been morally obligated as a teacher to say, “Stop, I only mean it
figuratively.” But He doesn’t do that; instead, what does he do?

My research showed me that he turns to the twelve, and he says
to them, what? “We better hire a public relations (P.R.) agent; I really blew it guys.” No! He says, “Are you going to leave me too?” He doesn’t say, “Do you understand I only meant it as a symbol?” No! He says that the truth is what sets us free, I have taught the truth. What are you going to do about it?

Peter stands up and speaks out; he says, “To whom shall we go?
You alone have the words of eternal life and we’ve come to believe.” Peter’s statement, “To whom shall we go?” implies that, “You know, Jesus, we don’t understand what you mean either, but do you have another Rabbi on the scene you can recommend? You know, to whom shall we go? It’s too late for us; we believe whatever you say even if we don’t understand it fully, and if you say we have to eat your flesh and drink your blood, then somehow you’ll give us the grace we need to accept your words at face value.” He didn’t mean it figuratively."
However, it is said in the Bible that Scripture is truth and there are stern warnings about tradition and about adding to the truth.
Please quote what Scripture passages you are referring to. In 1 Timothy 3:16 St. Paul writes “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness”. However, St. Paul does not write only Scripture. In fact St. Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 2:15 “Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours”.

Your the one that is rejecting what the bible says. It clearly says, hold fast to the traditions handed down to you whether by word of mouth or by epistle. Paul is clearly supporting tradition. Paul also mentions in 1Corinthians that it is good that the Corinthians have held the traditions given to them. Christ only condemns bad traditions as the Jews taught, not all tradition. Christ gave a whole truth, if you do not want to accept the whole thing that is your choice, but know that you are only accepting a part of Christ. You say you have faith but can’t accept the entire faith?

Della:

I admit that Chick is a little too hateful of Catholicism for my taste, however; the book that I was referring to was on his website. It was NOT his own writing.

So I was told that it is sad because I don’t search for real truth. I was told that I believe without a clue whatever my Church tells me, yet most of you believe in a document that your Church made (The Catechism) without looking at the document for yourselves and referring to Scripture as to its validity.

I do indeed search for truth. I search for it through the Bible, through Prayer and through Fellowship. I search for it from a direct source which is God’s Word not a printed document that the Catholic Church creates which is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I cited the Bible for my sources in my arguments from Hebrews to various writings of Paul, from Acts to the Gospels. My Church that I am at has that same belief that it is NOT the authority but that JESUS CHRIST IS. When there are issues, it goes to the Bible as the final say.

To All:

Many of you were very receptive to my questions and for that I give you my thanks. I will not be leaving the forums but I can see that my beliefs are VERY different from yours now.

Thanks for all

“Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men…” Mark 7:7-8

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God…” 1 Thessalonians 2:13
