Questions about the devil and what he is able to do with our body and mind

I keep hearing how exorcists heal people with mental illnesses through exorcism and that the devil can play a role in mental illness. It freaks me out.
  1. Do exorcists believe that all mental illness is the result of demonic activity…or do they believe that some cases are simply just mental illness with no demonic influence to it?
  2. Can the devil make a normal functioning person into a schizophrenic, deaf, dumb, delusional, mentally retarded, etc. just out of the blue? (ex: I go to bed normal, and wake up a schizophrenic person)
  3. Can the devil also cause someone’s heart to stop beating or their lungs to stop breathing…out of the blue?
  4. How can one know they have demonic obsession and how can they get rid of it if it happens…especially if it is so strong that the person contemplates suicide to get rid of the torment?

Mental illness and demonic activity are two different things.
  1. No. Mental illness and demonic activity are two different things. It can be the case that a person is doubly afflicted by mental illness and demonic activity, but this is even rarer than being afflicted by the latter alone, which in itself is quite rare.
  2. Mental illness and demonic activity are two different things. A demon or the devil himself can take over a person’s body but cannot control the will. It may be the case that demonic activity produces some very odd signs and symptoms in an individual which makes it seem as if he has a mental illness, but as soon as the demonic activity goes away, these signs and symptoms go away.

what about blindness? Can the devil cause someone to be temporarily blind?

I have this worry that the devil will suddenly cause me to be blind, deaf, and inaudible…thus I wouldn’t be able to get help because they won’t know what to do because I can’t talk and I won’t be able to hear or see them so i can’t rely on them…so I would never get an exorcism because they wouldn’t know I would need one…so I would be stuck in the condition forever.
 
Why are you worrying about this at all?

If you feel in need of help at the moment then seek it, but if you don’t need help then don’t worry unecessarily about things that wil probably never happen. It’s a bit like worrying unecessarily that you will step out on the road one day and a car will run you over. You should keep your eyes open for hazzards, but don’t wory about hospital treatment unmess you actually get run over.

Go and speak to your priest about it, but don’t spend your time worrying about it.
