Questions about the Promises of St. Bridget of Sweden's 12 Years Prayers

1. The soul who prays them will suffer no Purgatory.
2. The soul who prays them will be accepted among the Martyrs as though he had spilled his blood for his faith.
   3.The soul who prays them can choose three others whom Jesus will then keep in a state of grace sufficient to become holy.
3. No one in the four successive generations of the soul who prays them will be lost.
4. The soul who prays them will be made conscious of his death one month in advance.

** If the soul praying these prayers dies before the entire 12 years of prayers have been completed, the Lord will accept them as having been prayed in their entirety, because the intention of the soul was to complete them as directed. If a day or a few days are missed due to a valid reason, they can be made up for later, at the soul’s earliest opportunity.

My way of interpreting it would be to say that much devoted faithful praying will bring us many wonderful graces and blessings.

The promises for the 12-Year Prayers of St. Bridget have a lot of the same flavor as the promises of the 15 Prayers of St. Bridget and St. Elizabeth of Hungary’s prayers in honor of the Drops of Blood.

It used to be a “thing” where people would attribute (a book) (a prayer) (a devotion) to Famous Figure X, whether to lend it credibility, historicity, or to make it more interesting than to admit it was written by Unknown Person Y. If I had to guess, I’d think something similar is happening here, since I’m having difficulty finding a reference to these that predates the 2000’s.

For the 15 Prayers of St. Bridget, they’re relatively easy to trace through history-- the famous William Caxton, for example, printed a book about them. But in 1959, it’s said that the AAS said please feel free to pray the prayers, but don’t count on the promises, although looking at 1959’s document, I don’t see that addressed.

So, I’d take the same advice with the 12-Year Prayers (or any other prayers). Pray the prayers as a devotion; meditate upon the Wounds, but don’t do it expecting God to give you X. Sometimes, X does indeed happen— but attributing it definitively to “this” or “that” isn’t encouraged. You have gratitude for the intervention of God’s hand, and keep working towards heaven.

Right. In the St Bridget prayer book it clearly states that this is not a guarantee, but a worthy practice.
