Questions about The Rosary.

I was wondering if a Friar in or around 1524 would have carried a rosary. What would it look like? Would it be made of wood? How many decades? What is the meaning of the decades?
I know very little to none about this subject. I am trying to grasp as much as I can. I am not catholic. Please if you can give me as much detailed information you can provide on the matter. Thank you very much! 😃
