I am looking into religious life and I have been on several retreats to different orders but none of them have really felt right. I recently discovered the order of the Society of Mary. I like alot of their views and their mission but there are a few things missing that, to me, are a big part of religious life such as the habits. Habits are not worn by the group I am looking at. Does anyone know much about the Society of Mary? Any answers or info would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Habits are not apart of the charism of every religious community/order.

If this is something that you need then that is one way to know that you are not called to a certain group.

I looked into them during my initial discernment but decided that they were not a fit for me and I was not a fit for them.

If I recall correctly they have more brothers than priests. They focus on the equality of all members trying not to draw a distinction to those in the clerical orders. They do staff some parishes but I believe their main work in in Education.

We had a Marist brother teach in our novitiate program.

As a member of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, I have been blessed by a group of three Marianist Priests who feel called to found a new religious community. The Community that they have founded wears simple blue habits, and they are consecrated to Mary. I am personal friends with them, and for a long time discerned joining them. They are excellent and orthodox in their theology and spirituality.

The Society of Mary does have a habit that they are invested with at the beginning of their novitiate. Whether or not they wear it is the choice of the individual member.

There are actually five branches that constitute the Marist family: Marist Laity, what used to be referred to as a Third Order; the Marist Fathers and Brothers (SM), a clerical congregation, founded by Father Jean Claude Colin, about 1816; the Marist Brothers (FMS), primarily a teaching congregation of Brothers, founded by St. Marcellin Champagnat, a Marist Father; the Marist Sisters, (SM), co founded by Father Colin, and Jeanne Marie Chavouin (not sure of the spelling of her name); and the Marist Missionary Sisters (SMSM), who emerged from the missionary work pioneered by Francoise Perreton, a member of the Marist Laity, in the South Pacific.
