Here are a couple of books which might be useful:

’Inquisition’ by Edward Peters.Peters is a professor of Medieval History at the University of Pennsylvania.

Some reviews: “Peters makes a forceful and cogent case that history and myth inform one another - thus making historical objectivity but another myth. Not only an excellent study of the Inquisition, but a piquant look at the methodology of historians.”
Kirkus Reviews
“Mr Peters’ book is as good a compendium as you will find - scholarly, well annotated, exact but unpedantic.”
Anthony Burgess - New York Times Book Review

"The Spanish Inquisition" by Henry Kamen. Kamen is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a professor of the Higher Council for Scientific Research in Barcelona.
"[This book, is] the best general book on the Spanish Inquisition both for its range and its depth of information [Kamen] reaffirms his contention that an all -powerful, torture-mad Inquisition is largely a nineteenth-century myth.’
Richard L Kagan, New York Times Book Review.

Best of all but very difficult/impossible to get is the BBC documentary “The Myth of the Spanish Inquisition”. I wonder why this video of all the documentaries which the BBC have produced should be so difficult to buy.

Think about what you read not all of it is true.

Not only what we read but what we see on TV and hear on the radio.

It is a pity that people are not taught to read and view critically. This leads to unquestioning acceptance of what is presented. We should always take what we read or hear with a grain of salt and attempt to find the original source.

Especially when they try to rewrite history by claming the inquisition was not all that bad and only killed heretics and when they try to justify the crusades and such. As well you shouldnt accept the historians who exaggerate the victiums of any of the crusades or inquistions to prop up their political agenda. I still believe the inquisition were horrible and that there is no use denying it.

Shadowcry, what is your understanding of the inquisition and the crusades and what have you read to bring you to this understanding?

Mostly secular books, a couple Catholic books articles and such. People’s opinion’s, priests, life I suppose.

I have my understanding of the Inquisition and the Crusades from books and reading articles.

I still believe the inquisition were horrible and that there is no use denying it.

What have you read to convince you that the Inquisitions were horrible? What about the crusades?

What has been done to convince you that the crusades were necessary?

The inquisitions were horrible and so were the crusades their is a lot of proof of this.

I would really like to talk with you about your understanding of the Inquisitions and the Crusades but you will have to expand on your comments if we are to dialogue. What about the Inquisitions do you think were horrible? If you make a statement e.g. the Inquisitions were horrible you really have to produce some support of this comment. 🙂

If I were to make a statement e.g. Islam is unfair to women. and left it at that I am not likely to convince anyone or advance a discussion.

If we talked to some Christians in Pakistan we might here some interesting views on their persecution by Muslims. They are viciously attacked daily. No Pakistini has any right to complain about the crusades.

I am reading **“The Spanish Inquisition” by Henry Kamen **right now. It is a liiitle tedious on detail, but other than that I have found that it is an excellent explaination of the situation of the time.

He does not attempt to minimize the sicknessess of the Inquisition, but nor does he try to demonize all those involved. He seems very careful to show both support and opposition given by various Church officials.

I think it is essential for all Catholics who are involved in apologetics to thoroughly understand the Inquisition in its historical context.
