Hello All,
I have a question concerning Bishops.
In Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, and a few other Churches the Order of Bishop is absolutely essential. For the Bishop, ordains all Priests, and Deacons with whom the laity interact and guide. Together, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, laity,as “The Church,” We proclaim the good news and make disciples of all nations. Now, since the very beginning of The Church we have had those stalwart shepards to guide us.
Now on to my questions.
In lands where there are no Bishops, how does the eucharist get confected for use by the priests?
I know that since the beginnings of The Church when a Bishopric was vacant the Bishops would pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit and draw lots among the candidates and then ordain the winner as it were. So it seems it takes a Bishop to ordain a Bishop.
But, if all the bishops in the region are gone can the surviving priests pray for guidance and draw lots to raise one of their own to the Bishopric?
I think this would break Apostolic Succession. So to restore the Apostolic succession the newly elected Bishop would have to go to the Leader of,“The Church,” and be Ordained by him.
How do the Reformation Churches solve this issue since they can’t just go to the Pope?
Has this issue ever happened in the Catholic Church?
I realize these may sound silly but i’m curious.
Peace be with you
