Just remember that the people there will come and go (moving, dying, etc…), but the theology will remain the same. Are you comfortable enough to live your theology and not explore your interests in Catholicism?

btw, it’s nice to meet ya!!
Nice to meet ya too. One reason I’m thinking about becoming Catholic is because I share their theology. Even so, the people I’m growing up with are huge church goers. I may go into the ministry, someday. But I’m gambling on which denomination… 🤷

MrZetterlund, you said:

**I’m protestant, and I’ve been investigating in Catholosism since I’ve been impressed with answers I’ve recieved to previous questions.

**
**If you don’t mind me asking: which protestant church?

I want to ask some questions, and if you can, give me a scriptual response. Of cousre, I won’t limit you to scripture, But if you could, just give me a good explanation:

#1: Why do you pray to Mary rather than God?**

If I ask you to pray for me, would you? Of course you would. If I ask Mary, the Mother of God, or my Grandma or Aunt who are one with God in Heaven, to pray for me, do you think that they would? Of course they would, and their prayers are infinitely more efficacious than yours or mine. As a former Lutheran, my friends and other non-Catholics would tell me that the CC teaches their flock to worship the blessed Mother of God, so I checked it out in the on line CCC, once upon a time, and now I am a Catholic. So silly to believe that the CC would teach such idolatry.

#2: Why do you confess to a priest rather than to God?

*"Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Here we can see that Jesus sent his church leaders out to forgive sins, just as His Father sent him to forgive sins. The priest has zero power to forgive anyone’s sins; it’s Jesus speaking through his instrument. You don’t really think that the fallible, sinful Apostles had any power to forgive sins, by their own admission, do you? Confession is entirely Eucharist based. Jesus just wants us to wipe the sin slate clean before we enter His Fathers House and receive Him in the Eucharist.

**#3: What’s the deal with having a pope and saints?

**
What’s the deal with having pastors and ministers, presiding over their flock?

Saints, broadly speaking, are those who follow Jesus Christ and live their lives according to his teaching. Narrowly speaking, a saint is someone with singular heroic virtue, such as mother Theresa, who was a role model of Catholic virtues. The process by which someone becomes a saint is called canonization. The Catholic church has canonized around 3,000 people. According to the Catholic church, the pope does not make someone a saint – the designation of sainthood only recognizes what God has already done.

**#4: Do you preach in your churches or is it all ritual?

**

Catholic priests/bishops preach just as pastors/ministers do. The difference between my former Lutheran church and the Catholic church to which I now belong is the fact that the Christ in the Eucharist is the focal point at the Mass, and the pastor is the focal point at church. I feel so much more closer to Jesus in the CC.

#5: Why do you annoint with oil?

Oil is used in the administration of a Sacrament, which is an outward action of an inward grace. In scripture we see many examples of anointing with oil, especially for the sick - and to consecrate people, especially priests and kings, and things to be used in the service of God. Here is a very small sampling of some of those scriptures:

With this sacred anointing oil you shall anoint the meeting tent and the ark of the commandments, the table and all its appurtenances, the lampstand and its appurtenances, the altar of incense and the altar of holocausts with all its appurtenances, and the laver with its base.
When you have consecrated them, they shall be most sacred; whatever touches them shall be sacred. Aaron and his sons you shall also anoint and consecrate as my priests. (Exodus 30:26-30)

They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. (Mark 6:13)

Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15)

Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. (John 12:3)

**#6: Do you always agree with what the pope declares or says?

**

Jesus said to Simon: "You are Kepha, and upon this kepha, I will build my Church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. Jesus’ church is built on Peter, and since Jesus’ church is to exist until the end of time, Jesus’ church is also built on Peter’s successors. Papal infallibility is achieved by the action of the Holy Spirit, not the Pope! The Pope is preserved from the possibility of error when he solemnly declares or promulgates to the Catholic Church a dogmatic teaching on faith or morals, just as the Holy Spirit works in the body of Christ, the Church. This dogma, however, does not state that the Pope cannot commit sin in his own personal life or that he is free of error, even when speaking in his official capacity, outside the specific contexts in which the dogma applies. It is all about the holy spirit protecting the deposit of faith so that every person, regardless of generation, can have access to it. No other institution on earth has had 264 consecutive leaders for almost a two thousand year period, (which included a few bad Popes)- proclaim with absolute fidelity, the teachings of its founder. All the credit goes to the holy spirit, who works through the man who sits in the Chair of Peter.

God bless…

If CC is is Catholosism, yeah. Basically. I got to admit, I’m pretty sold on Catholosism. But I could never leave my church, though. I plan on preaching the word of God when I’m older. So maybe I’ll start a Catholic church or something with a protestant spirit or something, idk.
I like your fervor, but nope, you can’t start a Catholic Church. It doesn’t quite work like that.

Right. The Catholic Church already exists - Jesus started it. 🙂

If you wanted to be a Catholic priest, first, you would become a Catholic. Then, after a few years of living as a regular Catholic, you would discern with a Spiritual Director for one year to see whether the priesthood is for you. Then, if so, you would go to Seminary for about 7-8 years. After that, you would be a Deacon for one year, and then you would be ordained as a priest.

The Bishop would then send you to a church and you would help the older priest. You wouldn’t have to start one up; there would already be a congregation who needs you, and you would serve them together with an older priest for about three-five years, while learning from the older priest, and then after that, you would get your own church by yourself, for a while, and then after that, they would send a young, newly ordained priest to come and help you, and you would teach him all kinds of things based on experience that he didn’t learn in Seminary. 🙂

Ohmygosh… That’s a looooooong prosses. I’m fully capable of teaching now! sigh I’m gonna have to wait a long time to join the ministry. :crying:

Ha ha…😃

Everyone thinks they can preach and many, many, many do. I acknowledge the multitude of ‘pastors’ abound, around us!

The Apostles learned from Our Most High Priest and it took them about 3years. Yet, they all took off for the hills when Our Lord was captured and killed. Peter, the ‘Lead’ shepherd DENIED Him 3-times and Thomas did not believe…

The priesthood is about SERVICE. To be a servant of Our Lord and minister to His people requires all of your being for a LIFETIME…and without getting cent to your name! The 7 - 8yrs is nothing to one who ‘surrenders’ his life to be a a good and faithful servant.

Read the newspapers. Many, many have fallen! We do not forsake them for they remain God’s children. But in their stead, more, faithful servants are summoned. Have a look around the globe. Some of the MOST fervent priests and ‘vociferous’ apologetics were protestants! Who knows, my brethren, you may number among them in some capacity in the future! God’s Will be done.

God Bless

Luke 17: 20 - 25

20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed;
21 nor will they say, Lo, here it is!' or There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
22 And he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see it.
23 And they will say to you, Lo, there!' or Lo, here!’ Do not go, do not follow them.
24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day.
25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

as one can see many will be preaching, but our Lord says: do not follow them.

Yeah, maybe I can work on my chasity in the meantime. I love that quote from your Saint Augustine when he used to pray “Lord make me chaste, but not yet.” I would make a good apologetic, I guess. I can pwn some atheists:cool: -but who can’t?

I just hope I can join the ministry before He returns. How am I going to save souls if the world’s already perfect??:banghead:
Anyway, I think this passage is talking more along the lines of those who preach the end is near. Not necessarily to deny those preaching.

no, it is not. i will let you ponder upon it for while.

Hey, Mr. Z!

I used to know some baptists years ago. Pretty nice people, but a little opinionated (unlike you, of course).

🙂

Yeah, alot of babtist churches are very southern. Of course, being southern sometimes comes with being a pea-brained Bible thumper. But our church isn’t like that. My friend who’s a redneck always imitates his preacher when we talk about my future in the ministry. All he undersands about organized religion is,
“A-men!” “Praise the Lord!” “Lord- cast dem’ demons out this here child!” sigh

Got a few demons in my closet that could use some casting out!

😃

I have to say that I did first learn to love reading the Bible from Baptists. And I have no regrets about that love–there’s a lot of good stuff within it’s pages.

So what brings you here, Mr. Z? Just curious, or trying to make up your mind about something?

🙂

Yeah, I’m wondering if I should covert to Catholosism. I believe it’s the closest thing to the true church of Christ. However, I’m a proud member of Midway Babtist church. I’m really close to my church family and everything. Our pastor is awsome, too. He’s drawn alot of people to that church because of his preaching skillz. He’s very good. I can see why Catholics make such a big deal about there being so many denominations now. But what can we do?

Indeed!

What helped you decide the Catholic Church was closest to the truth? (Just curious.)

ah… I see your game HOW DO I CONVINCE THEM!, right? -jk;)

Well, the first thing I didn’t get was I thought the Catholic church kinda put the preacher and pope in the place of God. You know, with all the ring kissing and the confessing of sins. (hey, I still don’t get that “ring kissing” part.) But I found out that confession was Biblical. Also, praying to Mary I thought was exalting her a bit too much. But it does make sense that she was close to Jesus so you ask her to deliver your prayers. I guess that’s tradition. Which you see alot of tradition that is in Judaism that isn’t in the Bible. Like fasting, the Bible doesn’t tell you how to fast exactly. I was impessed with the answers I got. (I didn’t have to pull teeth like when I was investigating Mormonism.) The confessions of sins alone was enough to convince me, because protestant churches don’t have confession, usually. I g2g, later.👍

Fasting is all over the bible actually, OT & NT but yeah I do agree that the bible lacks in terms of guiding you on how to go about doing that. That’s where having tradition is nice, it gives you something to stand on so to speak Of course in this case it’s a small t tradition, not a big T tradition, I guess that’s something you would have to learn abit more about. If you’re curiose, here’s the CCC entry about it.

usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect1chpt2.shtml#art2

Alright… Getting a good feel of it so far. Accept perhaps number six on as to whether or not you’ll always agree with the Pope. Most of you answered “yes” when dealing with faith and morality.
But once I heard that the Pope declared that condums should not be permitted to help stop the spread of aids in Africa. And another when they made this doctrine so that the vadicant can protect the priest in a molestation charge. I don’t know if I agree with that. Like when Jesus said it was more lawful to heal someone on the Sabbath than to turn a blind eye. And to not judge by mere appearences and make the right judgement.
What doctrine is that?
