I’m not really sure if it’s a doctrine. But I heard that the Vadicant pushes molestation cases that involve priests under the rug.

Not the Vatican, no. The Vatican is really upset about the whole thing.

But there were certain Bishops who thought that moving those priests around without telling anyone what they had done was a good way to make the problem go away. They were hoping that by getting a “second chance” those priests would smarten up and quit doing that stuff.

Obviously, that’s not what happened - those priests went ahead and committed the same sins again, and got caught.

I’m protestant, and I’ve been investigating in Catholosism since I’ve been impressed with answers I’ve recieved to previous questions. I want to ask some questions, and if you can, give me a scriptual response. Of cousre, I won’t limit you to scripture, But if you could, just give me a good explanation:

#1: Why do you pray to Mary rather than God?

#2: Why do you confess to a priest rather than to God?

#3: What’s the deal with having a pope and saints?

#4: Do you preach in your churches or is it all ritual?

#5: Why do you annoint with oil?

#6: Do you always agree with what the pope declares or says?

#2: I confess to God and to the Priest because Jesus gave that Authority to the Apostles
#3: Apostlic Succesion and Commuion of Saints
#4: Both it is called the Homily
#5: This is done during certain times and Sacraments. Oil has been traditionally used for healing purposes.
#6: If he speaks in Ex Cathedra then yes, but if he has a personal opinion, it depends. No Catholic has to agree with what any other Catholic may say, including the Pope, but Church Teachings on the other hand are not up for debate.

It is not a doctrine, but rather a media distortion of the document *Crimen Sollicitationis. *The US council of Catholic bishops rebut the false claims about the document here: usccb.org/comm/archives/2003/03-165.shtml.

In short, it’s a canon law issue, not a doctrinal issue. When priests or bishops attempt to cover up abuse, they are doing so in spite of canon law, not because of it.
