4 If a Catholic sins before he or she tells the priest in confession
and they die will the still go to heaven?
Should say an act of perfect contrition (sorrow for having offended God over fear of Hell) until you can make it to confession. At least that’s what we were taught pre-Vatican II. Sorrow for sins is always required.

I thought perfect contrition has to be sorrow for OFFENDING God only.

Fear of the fires of Hell only amount to imperfect contrition.

Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him.

Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it

If I have sex and I am not married Its a mortal sin if i know its wrong and I do it anyway right. Its where my heart is.and if I dont confess it I go to hell.

Now what if I look at a person thats dressed sexy and I stare at her and want her, but I do not have sex with them is that a Venial sin? Or is it still a mortal sin?

Lust is certainly breaking the 9th Commandment
The Ninth Commandment—“You shall not covet…your neighbor’s wife”
  • Lust—Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. It is disordered because sexual pleasure must not be isolated from its true, natural place: within the Sacrament of Matrimony that is ordered to procreation of children and a unifying love between husband and wife (CCC 2351). Lust, a sin and vice of the flesh, is often a difficult vice to overcome. Human weakness of will and lack of conformity to God is a result of the fall of mankind that causes a disorder between soul and body (called concupiscence) which is often manifested in lust.Yet, lust is a sin that can be overcome through prayer and grace through the Christian sacraments. Christ wills that we overcome lust and replace it with Christian love and purity of heart (Matthew 9:28). “Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).

I would say that if you knew it was wrong to fantasize about that person (i.e. “want her”), and you did it anyway, then it could be mortal. If it was out of a strong, compulsive habit, and you felt terrible immediately, asking for forgiveness, it might be venial.

Either way, if you aren’t sure, you should go to confess it to a priest. Part of what a good priest will do is counsel you on such issues.

I just want to remind everyone that the Bible speaks of different kinds of sins.

I Corinthians 6 makes it clear that there is a difference between sexual sin and every other sin (I Corinthians 6: 18)

I John 5: 16 talks about "sins not leading to death and “the sin leading to death.”

So this idea of “mortal” and “venial” sins is NOT a doctrine of man, it’s very Biblical.

1 Why don’t Catholics soulwin ?

2 Why don’t they have Bibles in the the church for the members to read at the mass?

3 When I talk to Catholics they dont know the bible all that well ?
Is this important for a Catholic to study?

4 If a Catholic sins before he or she tells the priest in confession
and they die will the still go to heaven?
  1. Catholics do evangelise, but evangelism needs to take into account the individual, the person’s weaknesses and strengths, and who is being evangelised. I see evangelism as the ability to give a reasoned explanation for what you believe (as one of the letters to Timothy makes clear).
  2. A Catholic will usually have a Bible at home and most Catholics have the scripture. The Bible (Old Testament and New) are read in the lectionary cycle, along with a passage from the Gospels, depending on the year of the cycle. The priest gives a homily on the Word of God at Mass.
  3. The Bible is extremely important to Catholic spiritual life. The monastics for example, make careful contemplation of the Word of God central to their monastic and liturgical life, and it is much the same in all other Catholic religious groups. The constitution on Divine Revelation strongly encourages all Catholics to be familiar with scripture and also scholarly commentary on it.
  4. If we are talking about ‘mortal sin’, one has to willingly commit a grave moral evil deliberately with no sense of repentance. Sorrow over the sin for love of God is sufficient for salvation if confession is not available.

I am not sure what you mean about “soulwin”. HOWEVER, most Catholics agree with Saint Francis that we should always preach the gospel, with the use of words only as needed.

Very well put.

Do you mean death as in the body death or the souls death?

I think it can mean both. doing drugs could send you to hell if you die from them. Its your god, right.(idolatry) Even if I don’t die in the body, and you live in your sin and die say, in a car crash, you would still go to hell. so what sin does not lead to death?

Can’ t all sins lead to death? smoking, gambling, drugs(alcohol) pornography, homosexuality, abortion.the seven deadly sins. all sins leads to death? What sins don’t? All sins offend God right God hates all sin. Can you list some for me that don’t. Thank you.

Perhaps the greatest evil of the American people is apathy! But who cares?😦

Honestly, I’m going to say that while Bible study is very commendable, and very spiritually helpful…it isn’t particularly “important” to us. That is to say, at least, it is not essential to the individual Catholic.

The best scripture scholars in the world are in the Catholic Church. And we encourage Catholics to study the Bible. But it is not, as the protestants make it, a necessity or essential to the faith of the individual Catholic.

People for millenia were illiterate. Yet they got the doctrines of the faith and the stories of Christ from their preachers, from stained glass windows, from private devotion, etc…

The Scriptures are often obscure and difficult and confusing. I would recommend that anyone start with the Gospels and the Psalms. But beyond that…you really start to need guidance from clerical authorities…lest a Reformation happen. Luckily, these days we have many resources for Catholics to study the scriptures orthodoxly.

But no, we don’t particularly emphasize it. Because it is not particularly necessary, for an individual Catholic, in knowing and practicing the doctrines of the faith. This sort of “Bible-olatry” of the Protestants, their misplaced obsession with it, makes me uncomfortable. We are trying to get to know Christ…not the Bible and it’s most trivial details. The Bible is immense help in getting to know Christ, but there are plenty of other ways, and being a slave to the text itself is certainly not the biggest emphasis in our worship or teaching.

The verse is speaking of a spiritual death. When a person is born again (as discussed in John, chapter 3) they undergo a spiritual rebirth, whereby they receive the Spirit of God, or what St. Paul calls the “indwelling Holy Ghost” (1 Cor 12). This spiritual rebirth is what makes us, as St. Peter says “a partaker in the divine nature”. This second birth gives us a share in the eternal life of God, and makes us truly a “new creation in Christ Jesus”.

When a person commits a serious sin, whereby he turns his back on God and chooses what God forbids, he commits spiritual suicide and thus dies spiritually. In other words, he looses the indwelling Holy Ghost by his turning away from God and toward sin.

Hebrews 10:26 confirms this when it says “if we sin willfully after coming to the knowledge of the truth there remains no more sacrifice for our sins”.

A slight sin, without really thinking about it, will not destroy the life of God within us. But a truly willful sin, whereby we say to ourselves “God does not want me to do this, but I will anyway” does indeed result in spiritual death.

truthnlight, Pax et Caritas gave a very good answer to your question about sin.

truthnlight, I’m not sure how you’ve been taught in your Protestant church. In the evangelical churches, I was taught that all sin was “equal.” If you raped and murdered a little girl, or if you made copies on the company copy machine, both sins were equal in God’s sight.

And according to the evangelical churches, it really didn’t matter, because all our sins, past, present, and future, were forgiven anyway.

I always believed that, but I knew that something wasn’t right. It just doesn’t make sense that raping and killing are the same as making copies.

I learned about mortal and venial sins in the Catholic Church, who showed me the verses in the Bible that talk about different kidns of sin.

This doesn’t mean that we just ignore the “venial” sins. It isn’t right to make copies at the office, and if we keep allowing these “little sins” in our lives, eventually our relationship with the Lord and with His Church will suffer and shrivel up and possibly even die.

But making copies is a lot less serious than raping and killing a little girl. THAT sin will immediately kill our relationship with Jesus and the Church.

1 Why don’t Catholics soulwin ?
We do-however we are not into the in your face prostelyzing many of our Protestant brehteren engage in, Becoming a Catholic is not just a matter of walking down the aisle to the Altar and declaring yourself a member. It takes at least a year of prayer , stduy and refelction to be accepted into our Church.

We also know that the best way win “souls” is by living an very outward Catholic life/As St Francis assiss said :

Preach the Gospel Everyday. Use Words When Necessary."

2 Why don’t they have Bibles in the the church for the members to read at the mass?
Our Mas is steeped in Scripture. For instance at Sunday Mass one will hear three scriputre readings-at the first two from the Old Testament or the Epistels-the third from the Gospels. The entire Bible is covered every three years.
3 When I talk to Catholics they dont know the bible all that well ?
Is this important for a Catholic to study?
Catholics may not know the “chapter and verse” side of the Bible as well as our Protestant Brettheren but we understand it a whole lot better than they do. That is becuase we have two thousand years of teachings to fall back on. We dont have to sit down and try to figure it out for oursleves-the Church has already expressed very well the Turth found within it. Since we are not limited in our Beliefs by Sola Scriptura," verse wars " and endless dicsussions of what a certain passage may mean are not necessary at all.
If a Catholic sins before he or she tells the priest in confession
and they die will the still go to heaven?
Yes-if they have repented and are truly sorry for their sin. We should, howver, confess a mortal sin as soon as possible. Failure to do would inicate a lack of true repentance

The answer to these questions is simple: CATHOLICS have a duty to obey the SEVEN SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH which are:

BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION, EUCHARIST, PENANCE, ANOINTING OF THE SICK, HOLY ORDERS and MATRIMONY.

Obey the TEN COMMANDMENTS as best we can.

Rather than HURL rhetoric at a DENOMINATION that differs from
what you choose to believe - perhaps, respecting those who have different views, but, still believe in JESUS CHRIST with their whole heart and soul are similar to you in the eyes of the SAVIOR. GOD will decide who is RIGHT and who is WRONG. You are not GOD and your remarks are not GOD WORTHY.

In a sense you are correct-- all sin tends towards (spiritual) death. But there is sin which directly causes death, i.e., mortal sin, and there is sin which predisposes one to commit sin that leads to spiritual death, i.e., venial sin.

If we freely do something which is, “grave matter” (mortal sin) then it causes directly to spiritual death-- whether it is sexual sin, murder, etc-- which is to say it deprives us of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which gives supernatural life to our soul.

If we freely do something which is not grave matter-- a small white lie, we become irritated and speak sharply to a friend (venial sin), etc., it is still a sin. However, it is not a sin which causes spiritual death in the soul. That is, it does not sever us from the life of grace in God. Be that as it may, all venial sin tends towards mortal sin (that is, spiritual death)-- callousness in subjecting oneself to God’s will makes it more likely that one will fall into grave sin. Jesus testifies to the converse of this-- one who is faithful in small matters will be faithful in larger matters. God detests venial sin as well as mortal sin, but venial sin does not separate us definitively from God.

So yes, all sin offends God, and God detests all sin. But, not all sin separates us from God completely. While we can die with minor sin on our conscience and still go to heaven, it is necessary that we should be purified of this minor sin before beholding God directly in heaven.

Hi TruthnLight - Christ be with you!
1 Why don’t Catholics soulwin ?
There is a Catholic organization called “The Legion of Mary” which does door to door evangelizing. But, you’re right. More needs to be done.
2 Why don’t they have Bibles in the the church for the members to read at the mass?
We have missals at mass. They contain the bible readings for the day which are read aloud. Missalettes are disposable versions of missals.
3 When I talk to Catholics they dont know the bible all that well ?
Is this important for a Catholic to study?
As with christians from the beginning, many do not open thier bibles. I read it daily, as well as others.
4 If a Catholic sins before he or she tells the priest in confession and they die will the still go to heaven?
Salvation is a gift from God, as you know. If the sin is grave enough, say blaspheming the Holy Spirit, then Jesus tells us that this sin is not forgivable (Mark 3:29).

We believe in Purgatory, or simply that a soul can be purged of sin before it enters heaven. This is supported in the scripture that we carry, but is not as evident in yours (2 Macc 12:38-46).

For an understanding of the Sacrament of Reconciliaton (Confession to a priest) See John 20:23. We retain the ministry that Jesus began with His apostles. Notice that He is giving this ministry to the twelve specifically. This responsibility is past onto the priesthood by way of the bishops.

But, given all that I just said, it is still God’s choice and only God’s choice.

1- We do. We pray for and try to help those who have not accepted Christ as their Savior.

2- Because Catholics are supposed to read the Bible every day; on Sunday at mass we attend a very, very holy service for Jesus. Scripture is read. But the mass is a time of worship, not personal Bible study.

3- I think Catholics actually do know the Bible, but I just don’t think Catholics use scripture like a quick draw. For instance, I know scripture, but it would take me a while to find the exact verses that I can recall.

4- If they say an act of perfect of contrition, they won’t. God alone judges the heart. If they have repented to Him perfectly with their heart, then of course they won’t go to hell. But if they survive, they should go to confession a.s.a.p.
