Oh, ok! I understand the monster bash part. As a Catholic who questions I seem to get bashed for simply asking the question, “Why does the Church ______? I don’t understand…” I like to remind people that this is the Catholic ANSWERS forum, so it’s ok to ask QUESTIONS so we can get the ANSWERS. 🙂
You should always ask questions here. There are many forums on this website available for you to discuss any aspect of Catholicism. 🙂 Direct any questions you have to the Apologetics forum or “Ask an Apologist”.

The issue here is that this is a Catholic website dealing with all issues from a Catholic perspective. From a Catholic perspective, the premise of Mormonism is false, because it denies the authority of the Catholic Church’s priesthood, as well as various fundamental beliefs that we hold to have been infallibly declared. Therefore, there is no room for a Catholic to believe that the Book of Mormon is scripture, or that Joseph Smith was a prophet, or any of the unique beliefs of the LDS Church. From our Catholic perspective, such beliefs are false, as are other beliefs that you see discussed on this forum, such as sola scriptura, OSAS, no ministerial priesthood, Mary having other children, lack of the Bishop of Rome, etc.

What you will notice here is that whenever we criticize such unique LDS beliefs, certain people (really just one, at least on this forum, that claims/claimed to be Catholic and Mormon at the same time) will say that this is anti-Mormon, bigoted, etc. etc. Now, some people do say things like all LDS are liars, the LDS Church is satanic or a cult, etc. I refrain from that, as do many other Catholics here, as it is unproductive. However, it still is a valid endeavor, especially on a Catholic website, to discuss the beliefs of Mormonism that we see as innovations and thus have a more human origin, i.e. Joseph Smith and other LDS (and non-LDS) leaders. LDS have their own views on these subjects, and present their own arguments and unofficial and official websites that discuss these objections from their POV, including FAIR and the Maxwell Institute. Here, we discuss those beliefs from the Catholic premise that unique LDS beliefs are false, since as Catholics, we believe that we have the fullness of Truth, as well as valid priesthood through apostolic succession.

So, it is wrong for us to use words such as satanic, cult, etc. when discussing other religions, even if we believe that to be the case. It is NOT wrong for us to show why we believe that other beliefs, from our perspective, are false. We can all work together on various social issues, however doctrinally, there are differences, and many of us like to discuss those differences, and show why they are false and human innovations, from our perspective. The thing you’ll notice with relativists/universalists is that they call those that fervently believe in what they believe (i.e. their Church, the authority of that Church, etc) “doctrinaires”, “judgmental”, etc., but these same people are asserting their judgments on us as well, and these same people even say that certain people that respond to these threads need to go to confession, or are “uncatholic”. Talk about judgments.

Remember, as Catholics, we believe that our Church has the fullness of the Truth, and that our Church has divinely authorized authority. Therefore, we should endeavor to follow and believe in those doctrines (which define our Faith) and rules of the Church. Don’t let someone criticize you or tell you that you are “judgmental” for following and believing in that authority, and showing how others, “Catholics in name”, step on that divinely inspired authority, and attempt to make up their own rules, based on “feelings”. Cafeteria Catholics (those that pick and choose which doctrines to believe, and may even add a dash or spoonful from another religion) help contribute to the “wishy washy” image of the western Catholic laity. Everyone has the right to believe whatever they want (as long as they aren’t harming anyone), and in that, we have the right to show why we believe certain beliefs are false in our opinion, as well as why certain people cannot claim to be something and not follow the beliefs and rules of that organization or system, or add their own contradictory rules.

I personally have no problem with what other people think of Mormonism round here. If it is something worth replying to, I reply to it; if not, I ignore it.

The behavior of some catholics on this forum toward the lds church has been a disgrace…an absolute disgrace to the catholic church. You make it sound so nice and respectful when in fact, the threads are started by catholics with a negative intent. And that is the point. One thread: ‘How can people be mormon when their church is obviously false’ is only one example of disrespect toward mormons. How can one discuss mormonism on that thread when the title is so disrespectful toward mormons? And what about this title: ‘There are many ways to prove mormonism false’. Now that title of a thread was a sure way to get mormons to calmly discuss their faith. And these are just two among many.

In fact, a thread about the episcopal church that had the title ‘why are there episcopals when their church is obviously false’ later was closed by the moderators and taken off the forum. The OP used the mormon thread as an example for posting his thread. Why was that thread taken off the forum but the mormon thread was allowed to fester and stay on the forum?

And yes, when catholics call all mormons liars, dishonest, cultists, satanists etc, they need to go to confession because their post was uncatholicnand they only do it to get a rise and a response from the hapless mormon.

And as the poster said himself he sometimes feels hounded by the more doctrinaire catholics who bash him for asking a question.

Tolerance does not seem to be a trademark at times. However, I am no longer mormon or catholic on this forum. I am now happy go lucky and the stress relief is huge. It was the greatest decision that I have made to join the happy go lucky faith. No more pressure, no more mocking, no more bashing of my person… Now I can bounce around at will…:bounce:

Like I said: the Inquistion died a long time ago. And hopefully it will never return.

Well said.
:gopray2: “…soften the heart of this poster so that he also may become happy go lucky and find peace of soul…and please have him say whether he is the catholic or methodist when he posts so that I may know with whom I am responding to…thank you…and amen”.

🤷
And yet, people have the right to believe what they believe? Now Religio, I have been hounded and mocked on these threads for claiming to be lds and mormon. You even started a thread about it. I saw no showing me how I was wrong but I certainly was bashed and disrespected in the threads for believing that I am both.

Now if only you did show me my mistake…that would have been wonderful and if only if it were done by you and others with mercy and love…that would have been wonderful. But I was called a google catholic,a liar, never catholic, etc. by your wonderful catholic friends on this forum. I saw no showing…🙂

The behavior of some catholics on this forum toward the lds church has been a disgrace…an absolute disgrace to the catholic church.
The behavior of some LDS on MADB, and others (including those LDS missionaries that mocked a Catholic shrine) toward the Catholic Church has also been a disgrace…an absolute disgrace to the LDS Church. Note the word “some”. Many more Catholics could care less about the LDS Church. And vice versa.
You make it sound so nice and respectful when in fact, the threads are started by catholics with a negative intent. And that is the point. One thread: ‘How can people be mormon when their church is obviously false’ is only one example of disrespect toward mormons.
From the Catholic perspective, Mormonism is obviously false, as are the various versions of Protestantism. Get over it.
How can one discuss mormonism on that thread when the title is so disrespectful toward mormons? And what about this title: ‘There are many ways to prove mormonism false’. Now that title of a thread was a sure way to get mormons to calmly discuss their faith. And these are just two among many.
The purpose of many of our posts on Mormonism is not to get Mormons to discuss their faith. In many cases, it is for Catholics to show how Mormonism is false in our perspective. This forum is called “Catholic Answers”. We do not need Mormon participation, however many LDS choose to participate to show their angle on matters, which is wonderful, since an investigator can see what another person has to say. If someone doesn’t like that, they don’t have to participate. Note Zerinus’ response above. And whether or not a Mormon can “calmly discuss their faith” is up to themselves. No one can “make” you do anything without you letting them.
In fact, a thread about the episcopal church that had the title ‘why are there episcopals when their church is obviously false’ later was closed by the moderators and taken off the forum. Why not ask the mods and see what they say?

.

There you go again judging others, when you say that others are wrong in judging. Please follow your own thoughts.

And Mormons are not hapless. There you go again making a contrast between the evil Catholics and the pure innocent Mormons.
And as the poster said himself he sometimes feels hounded by the more doctrinaire catholics who bash him for asking a question.

Yes…on this forum…

Again, you always choose to dig at the Church that you supposedly belong to, bring up the Inquisition, the abuse scandal, etc.

:gopray2: “…soften the heart of this poster so that he also may become happy go lucky and find peace of soul…and please have him say whether he is the catholic or methodist when he posts so that I may know with whom I am responding to…thank you…and amen”.
That is cute! And clever. And funny! 😛

I agree 100%!

Actually there was. In fact, this has been going on for quite some time (years). In that thread, we repeatedly showed how LDS beliefs are incompatible with Catholicism, and how it is not possible for a Catholic to be a Mormon at the same time. Yes, you have a right to believe that if you want. We also have a right to show how it is wrong to do so, and impossible to be Catholic and Mormon, especially in one claiming that Catholicism is the “primary” religion. But you can go ahead and believe that. We’ve shown that a Catholic should never partake in the communion of any other church, or partake in anything offered by any other religion, including the Sacrament of Mormonism. Yet you claim that since Catholics don’t believe that Mormons are Christian, it’s okay, because it’s just like having bread and water. That misses the point. You may as well say that it’s okay for a Catholic to go to a Hindu temple and partake in the food that is offered to their gods, since we believe they are non-Christian, it’s just like eating regular food. We show you over and over, you choose not to listen.
Now if only you did show me my mistake…that would have been wonderful and if only if it were done by you and others with mercy and love…that would have been wonderful. But I was called a google catholic,a liar, never catholic, etc. by your wonderful catholic friends on this forum. I saw no showing…🙂
Try reading the threads. You will see us referring to Canon Law, the Catechism, Ecumenical Councils, etc. in how a Catholic that accepts the Divine authority of the Church cannot believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, or the Book of Mormon is scripture, and that the LDS Church belief that it alone has priesthood authority denies the efficacy of Catholic sacraments, including the Eucharist.

So again, you have every right to believe what you want. However we also have the right to believe what we want as well. This is a Catholic forum, and we can start threads about how Mormonism is false, because in the view of our religion, it is. There are elements of truth in it, as in all religions, however it is based on a false premise (in our view). LDS can and do debate us on their beliefs, however we do not start threads on the false beliefs of the LDS Church to invite Mormons to participate. We start them because we believe in the Catholic Church having the fullness of the Truth, and thus the story of Joseph Smith does not have any divine origin, in our view, and we want to discuss why that is the case, from our view.

And this is all highly ironic, because over on MADB, you call for Nancy Pelosi to be excommunicated, because she goes against Catholic teaching on abortion, yet we’re still waiting for you to call for your own excommunication, since you believe that the Book of Mormon is true, and participate in LDS Sacrament (whether or not it’s only when you go with your daughters is irrelevant, as has been said by others that have mixed families. You can go, sing the hymns, go to Sunday School, etc., but you do not have to, and should not, partake in the LDS Sacrament, if you believe the rules of the Catholic Church. You don’t, so it’s okay for you).

I agree 100%!
Thank you!

He condemns us for judging, then he judges us himself. He wants Nancy Pelosi to be excommunicated for going against Catholic teaching, yet he won’t call for his own excommunication for going against Catholic teaching. 🤷

. . . yet he won’t call for his own excommunication for going against Catholic teaching. 🤷
Why should he call for his own excommunication? If the Catholic Church wants to excommunicate him, there is nothing to stop them from doing so. But if they are willing to accept him, who are you to say that they shouldn’t?

Unfortunately that’s irrelevant. The relevant fact is that there is a contradiction of statements here, where he is calling for the excommunication of Nancy Pelosi because she does not follow Catholic teaching on abortion. Yet he similarly does not follow Catholic teaching on various important doctrinal matters, and believes that it is okay, because “feelings” are more important. It is this inconsistency that the rest of us notice.

… we do not start threads on the false beliefs of the LDS Church to invite Mormons to participate. I see. Isn’t that a little like the gossipers at the water cooler, ‘dishing the dirt’ about the doings of the girl in the fourth cubicle down, and getting annoyed if, when she overhears them saying something outrageously wrong (and generally negative, if not down right nasty) she interrupts them to set them straight?

How is it possible to have a conversation about another faith without (name removed by moderator)ut from believers of that faith? Isn’t there something, I dunno…just wrong about telling someone “go away, we are talking about you, not to you, please don’t mess a good gossip up with actual, y’know, FACTS?”

You were the last person I would have ever expected this sort of comment from, Religio.

I will admit that I have wondered myself about why the moderators leave up threads with titles that are so obviously disrespectful to the LDS faith…and take down threads with almost identical titles–but with a different religion (yet still not ‘Catholic’) targeted.

I am used to this stuff, but that made even me go “hmmn.”

Ah, well.

I haven’t been reading all the posts, so I don’t know what he has been saying about Nancy Pelosi. If it is true that he has been saying that she should be excommunicated, then he is wrong. That is between Nancy and her church. It has nothing to do with anybody else. Likewise, it has nothing to do with you to say that he should be excommunicated—regardless of what he thinks about Nancy Pelosi. That is between him and his church too. It is no business of yours at all.

And again irrelevant, but we’ve already seen your approach to such matters in the “latae sententiae” discussion. :rotfl:

Nope, I do believe I said that it is great and right that LDS should step in and give their views. The issue is when someone thinks it is “unChristian” when we start a thread about why another church or religion is holds false beliefs in our opinion, when, being Catholic, we do believe that other religions have various false beliefs, as the LDS Church that various false beliefs crept into Christianity, such as infant baptism, the traditional Trinity, the Real Presence in the Eucharist, etc. Threads aren’t always started to invite the opposing party, which was my main point.

Diana, again I did not say that we do not need people from other faiths in the threads. In fact, I explicitly stated that it is great that Mormons come here to discuss from their POV. The point was that we don’t always make threads for the LDS. You’re misinterpreting my statements. 😦

Many times we do discuss another faith without the (name removed by moderator)ut from actual persons of that faith, especially when we refer to the texts and words of such believers. In fact, we do it all the time at the collegiate level. I took a course on Hinduism, and the professor was not Hindu, nor were there any Hindus in the course.

Ah, well.

See who starts the mormon threads and tell me that I am wrong. But now I am a happy go lucky person who belongs to the happy go lucky faith. I feel much better now. :bounce:
28 of the 43 threads you started are Mormon threads hmmmm.

First, your first paragraph: I have no problem with mormon threads that enlist discussion. However, I do have a problem with threads that begin with inflammatory statements, designed to mormon bash. Also, even when a ‘nice’ mormon thread begins there are certain members of the forum who come on and make inflammatory and outageous statements. These are unchristian. The tone can be disrespectful to people of the mormon faith and they certainly do not further good discussion.

Second, if a catholic poster brings up an event in mormon history and tries to do a shock therepy, I think that it is perfectly correct for a mormon or anyone else to bring up events in catholic history. Something that you have had a problem about.

On the catholic threads we have had many mormons come and go and in most cases they go because of disrespect, mocking and bashing. But they certainly do not leave because of discussion.

Again, discuss away…it is wonderful to do so, but once people begin to derail the thread by inflammatory remarks, then it is up to moderators to step in or other catholic posters to put the thread back on track.

To speak with love and mercy is catholic, to inflame, mock or bash is uncatholic in my humble opinion.
