I’ve had 2 celibate priests at my parish. Luck of the draw, maybe.

In the typical Episcopal parish the priest’s wife is part breadwinner. A single ‘worker priest’ may shepherd a parish but also be a school teacher/ counselor, etc. There are Anglican Orders located in the inner cities ministering to the poor in this manner.

Our parish priest is celibate and actually enjoys being single. He mentioned once that life is much easier single. lol

Elizabeth I famously didn’t like married clergy.
 
The Episcopal Church is a member of the Anglican Community-there are ongoing currents to either remove or change the status of the ECUSA in the Anglican family but it has not happened

to apply a political term the Episcopal Church in the USA should be viewed as being on the far left of the Anglican Community

We ordain women -we ordain Gay Clergy-the Gay Clergy either need to be in a “committed” relationship or be celibate-how this is enforced is beyond me

We do not pray to the Blessed Virgin( indeed she is listed as St. Mary) -there are Episcopal rosary beads but they are different from RC ones-no one I know prays the Rosary

We have the same sacraments as the RC and Orthodox Churches

We have general Confession during the service although private confession is available

the Congregation hires the Priest not directly assigned -we have Bishops and in other parts of the Anglican community there are Archbishops

At times we can outdo the RC in ritual and liturgy

The Episcopal Church views itself as descended from the original Church established by Jesus Christ -we have valid orders ther being an unbroken line of succession

The issues of sexuality have caused great uproar and damage to the Church and show no signs of abating-

we are very close to the evangelical Lutheran Church in the USA

I have asked the question before: Is there any difference between Anglicans and Lutherans in practice/ polity?

I think it would better explained like Congress rather than the far left. There are both “parties” in TEC but currently the “far left” has power. I am what you would call an Independent. 😃

I brought this issue up to the Bishop during his last visit. We talked for a few minutes before mass after we vested. He explained that clergy is to be celibate until marriage. In a state where SS unions are not legal, that priest must remain celibate. My Diocese does not bless same sex unions. I believe even if it were legal in ND, our Bishop would not allow such blessings to occur.

I was wondering about that. In the Roman Communion we have the “Vow of Celibacy” or “Vow of Chastity” … is there an equivalent among Anglicans? (Not that it would be exactly the same, since unmarried Anglican priests have the possibility of marrying later.)

Any priest that is not married should remain celibate. Priest are no different than the average layperson on this issue. Hope that helps.

I hope you mean “in a diocese where the bishop doesn’t allow it” and not really “a state where SS unions are not legal.”

If your bishop thinks that the Church’s view of marriage should depend on the decisions of the state, then that’s a much bigger problem than the issue of same-sex unions itself.

The current diocese-by-diocese situation is also problematic, in terms of real unity (my bishop doesn’t allow same-sex unions in the diocese but has announced that he’ll let his priests cross diocesan borders to conduct such unions in churches belonging to other dioceses). But cravenly following the state, if that’s really what your bishop said, is the biggest problem of all.

I do not believe he is that concerned on whether or not it is legal. Sorry if it came across that way.
