questions for Protestants

Yes, I agree with this. However, what the “basics” are is a matter of debate. Many “Evangelicals” would say that sola fide in the Protestant sense is an essential of the faith. To more moderate evangelicals, this looks rather “fundamentalist.” It’s simply not that straightforward.

What you are calling evangelicals are more strictly called “neo-evangelicals.” Many people are suspicious of “neo-evangelicalism” but claim the old-fashioned label of Evangelical, while being regarded by neo-evangelicals as fundamentalists.

There simply are no clear-cut dividing lines, but what can be said is that fundamentalists occupy the hardline end of the spectrum.

Edwin
I think that’s a fair assessment. I’m speaking from a perspective of Fundamentalism being self-defined by strict Separation and Evangelicalism being anything else that believes in all of the same things as Fundamentalism except strict Separation.

But I will concede that the definition of Evangelicalism has gotten rather slippery.

what on earth makes me believe what I believe? Perhaps 20 years living in the southern US? 5 years living next door to Liberty University? and the scariest, worst 3 years of my life as a Catholic in middle Tennessee? I was not generalizing at all but speaking specifically of my own experience. Who are you to question my experience? If you have not had a similar experience then why bother to answer my thread? Quarrelsome and contentious posters who just want to start trouble and ridicule others are not Christian–IMO.
Yes I live in the South too and I have heard a few people say that Catholics aren’t Christians. But even so I think these people are in the minority when it comes to judging all protestants. I think most protestants I know believe Catholics are Christian but many of them have knee-jerk reactions to the Catholic Church mainly out of fear of the power of Catholicism and the realization that protestantism is the minority in Christianity.

“In as much as you have done it to the least of these…you have done it to me.” The least of these…anyone who bears the Light of Christ Within is in essence “Jesus”…those whom we do not feed, those whom we do not clothe, those whom we do not visit…are representing Jesus…

It seems you are defining “church” as an institution…it IS people, not an institution.
WRONG. It’s not only BOTH - it’s both AND JESUS.

It is an institution (". . . I will BUILD my CHURCH." - Matt.16)

It is people (". . . and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ." - 1 Cor.12:12)

It is JESUS Himself (“Saul, Saul, whay are you persecuting ME?” - Acts 9:4)

That’s the problem with Protestantism - too many personal interpretations.

Well, Publisher doesn’t even accept that doctrinal issues are of serious importance. As long as we look at the “light within” this is true unity.

The problem here is ideas have consquences. Who’s to say that Hitler, Stalin, or the abortion-rights-activist doesn’t sincerly believe they are looking at the light within? I’m sure many of them do believe they are walking the light. Unfortunately, they are in darkness.

I’m sure you would agree…

Would the Father and the Son disagree on infant baptism? Of course not…

Otherwise, they would not be perfectly one. This can be applied to so many doctrine and moral issues if could make your head spin.

True unity is the whole package! This includes doctrinal, theological, and most importantly love. It’s not either/or; it’s both/and.

God Bless,
JB

Great insight!

Here’s a BIG difference between Fundamentalists and Evangelicals: Fundamentalists tend to be cessationists. Cessationists don’t think the gifts of the Spirit still exist. Evangelicals tend NOT to be cessationists. I have friends who are Evangelicals who are far more willing to worship alongside Catholics than with cessationist fundamentalists.

As you are entitled to your opinion. The Pope is not in error as Jesus founded ONE Church. And that Church is the Catholic Church. She withstood the test of time and the gates of hell shall not prevail. And yes I agree, bless him for loving Christ’s Church! There is no my Church, ***your ***Church, or her Church. There is ONE Church and it’s His Church. It’s the only Church founded by our Lord Jesus Christ and that is His opinion actually His command. So your opposition lies not with the Pope and his proclamation of the Gospel but with Jesus Christ Himself. God Bless…teachccd:)
I commend you for your great faith in the Catholic Church, But Jesus didn’t establish that church. You have not read the scriptures if so, you do not understand them. There was no Pope then nor was he establish. Your reading from a 2000 year old document. Translated poorly as it was. it was written by the Jews for the Jews. If you except the Bible then you must except the Jews and Israels God. When Christ came, he established he’s church, Not the church of Moses, or Aaron, or of Abraham, His church with logical thinking would bare his Name, would hold his authority and power, and teach the truth and invite all to come unto it Catholic and protestants. God has chosen a people, Israel, they are his chosen people. If i picked up the bible for the first time and never read it before, would I have the right to change it, to fit my thinking? and who would have such authority, Catholic or protestants, and why would you if you are not Israel, Can you change 2000 years of instruction, of a record that doesn’t belong to you. The only reason you embrace it is because you want to be included, hoping to be included, Your impressed with the man Jesus. You want to be saved!! Yet do you know what that means.
You belong to a religion that you were brought up in, you follow the traditions of your fathers. Israel is Gods chosen people, If you embrace the Holy Bible you must embrace Israels God.

Don,
Why do you not include your religious affiliation in your profile? What are you ashamed of? Knowing where you are coming from makes the difficult job of understanding people on a forum much easier.
Paul

First of all:
Don, start another thread!! Please!! We would love to talk to you over there, not causing a traffic jam in Ravyn’s thread. Thank you!! Z

Having said that…
I guess it’s just me. I have been terribly amused at some of the “upsetness”. I have this imaginary little speech that I have been wanting to give, & this seems the place for it:
People, people, you poor upset & confused non-Catholic people who are gnashing your teeth over what Pope Benedict said…Get a **grip **on yourselves!!
He’s the Pope, for Heaven’s sake!! What did you :shrug:expect him to say & do??? Stand up in St Peter’s & solemnly declare that  this was it, he’d had enough, he was retiring & becoming a :rotfl: United Methodist pastor in Upstate NY??? (No, no; wrong smiley. ***Not ***ROTFL; I want : :extrahappy: !!!) (Why, :newidea: I could go to his church!!! 😉 I happen to know just the congregation in need of a new pastor…no, not mine… )

Seriously: He was speaking as the head of the largest Christian body in the world. He was, as it were, clearing the decks. Setting things in order. And a very sensible move, too: “This is where we are, this is where you are, now we can** talk**!!”

People, we do this everyday here on CAF. We state our positions, & then we try to maintain decorum–or at least charity–and discuss things. We talk issues…real ones, not nonsensical ones.
(OK,:hmmm: coming so close on the heels of a couple that I myself have posted in…that does sound mildly ridiculous…but I digress…)

And we do this, hopefully, to try to understand one another better. Something which rarely happens, when someone breezes in, eyes agleam & loaded for bear, declaring a great deal of nonsense along the lines of, oh, say…
[sign]:whistle:Just[ahem!! cough!cough!!] guess who I’m referring to!!****[/sign]

But, again…I digress…

jumping out of airplane for thrills?? Paul you have not met the thrill of the higher source which you are connected with. I know that you love the Lord I feel it from you. God bless you

Uh oh, another self-appointed prophet.
It seems the Jews said the same thing about Christ, you would fit right in at that time ready to stone Christ for claiming to be the Son of God, or false prophet, as they claim him to be, because your heart is so harden, blind to knowing who he was. It is easy to see that you would not know a prophet if you saw one or you would be to busy stoning him when you should be listening, because you have not the ears to hear, I am sure you would not know one if you saw him, because you are pass feeling that you cannot feel his words. Thank you for revealing yourself to me, and may the Lord open your eyes to the truth that you might listen before you speak.

How many blind people have you healed lately?

Edwin

I am not a prophet, nor have I claimed to be one, As for the question of healing the blind, more than you have, but remember Only Jesus does the healing, I am only his servant. Christ taught those who have faith to be healed, will be healed, but most of us are unbelievers, we have lost our faith in him. that is why they are not healed. If Christ were in your presents, and a doctor standing next to him, who would you go to, to be healed of him, the one you choose, is the one you believe in. The truth will always prick the wicked heart. Your faith is dead, because you know not the Christ in whom you worship. You may say all you want about your faith in Christ, but the real test that Christ puts you through, proves to him where you are in your faith, action speaks louder than your elegant words. For those who have not the Faith to be healed, the Lord has given us the herbs of the field, because he knew we would lack faith in him, sad thing, but true. If you want to continue to attack me, rather than listening, go head I have big shoulders.

Dear Mods,
this topic was finished before it even got started—all anyone ever wants to do is argue and not answer the question. So you can close it now.
