Let me just pose a few questions (sparked by a conversation I had with a very liberal atheist today):
  1. What does it mean to be narrow-minded?
  2. Are Catholics narrow-minded for not condoning homosexual marriages? The obvious answer being no, how do we defend statement?
  3. Does “separation of church and state” mean that you should not vote how you do because of what you believe religiously? If not, what other definition can we offer?
Offer your thoughts on any or all of these questions.

  1. Many liberals are narrow-minded as they ignore the scientifically-proven theories that same-sex-attraction is a psychological condition and evidence for them surpasses the genetic theories.
Being open-minded means looking at the larger picture and entertaining other possibilities; not defending one’s own narrow-minded beliefs as truth and calling others ignorant and hateful.

Being open minded in the eyes of liberals means accepting their perverted beliefs. So if that is open-mindedness, I’ll gladly stay beneath my rock in a sea of shallowness and narrow-mindedness.

A few thoughts:
  1. Narrow-mindedness is the inability to entertain an opposing opinion or viewpoint. Narrow-minded individuals are not willing to engage in intellectual debate about a particular topic out of arrogance, ignorance, and stubbornness. An open-minded person, by contrast, may hold true to a particular worldview, but is at least willing to listen to and actively engage in debate with differing opinions with regard to that worldview.
  2. No, we are not narrow-minded, so long as we can provide justification for our views–see answer 1). And there are plenty of ways to justify this position. Dealing with an atheist, the best approach I would take is the naturalistic one. He would likely appeal to science as his authority source, so take the battle to his own playing field. After all, if God made the natural laws, then science is on our side, right! From a purely naturalistic/physical standpoint, one cannot argue with the fact that the male and female bodies are perfectly complementary for one another–the right organ lines up with the right hole, if you know what I mean. The physiology of the vagina is specifically designed for penile penetration; not so with the anal orifice. You also have to look at it from an evolutionary perspective. There is no evolutionary success without reproductive success. Life cannot be created through homosexual unions. Therefore, there is no evolutionary success through homosexual unions. If homosexual unions are not evolutionarily advantageous, and evolution is the “prime mover” of life, so to speak, then homosexuality is a deviance of the natural law that will ultimately lead to extinction. The fact of the matter is, evolution (through God, of course) made sexual reproduction for procreation, not recreation. Even the most hardened atheist can’t deny that. Lastly with regard to this point, which is basic physics. Opposites attract, likes repel. Protons repel protons, yet attract electrons. A north pole on a magnet will repel another magnetic north pole, but will attract to a magnetic south pole. This concept is written in the most fundamental scientific laws in the universe, yet so many people are willing to consciously overlook this. Of course, if you are dealing with other Christians on this topic, there are many other approaches you can take.
  3. The modern use of “separation of church and state” is drastically different from what the founders of the Constitution had in mind. It is a mind-blowing ignorance of history to talk like we should not incorporate our religion into our voting. If there was to be “true” separation of church and state, why the mention of a Creator in the Constitution. Why the acknowledgment of “truths” of equality, and the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Aren’t these Christian truths that go beyond physical/mathematical truth? The country was founded largely with religious motives, from different Christian denominations. Because the original 13 colonies were so varied in their Christian denominations, the separation of church and state was included in the language of the Constitution to make it so one distinct denomination could not take political control of all of the colonies. But it was still founded as a Christian nation, with Christian principles, and Christian motives. I think the founders are rolling over in their graves with the modern asinine misuse of the separation of church and state as meaning no religiosity taken into account in political policy whatsoever.
Hope this helps.

Whenever someone starts throwing out words like “narrow minded, bigot, homophobe and religious”, etc. you know they have no rational basis to stand on.

**If they have to resort to name calling and insult hurling, perhaps they should spend more time thinking about their position, without irrational emotions attached!

If they have to resort to name calling and insult hurling, perhaps they should spend more time thinking about their position, without irrational emotions attached!
Exactly. Once they get to that stage, they are pretty good examples of their own narrow-mindedness.

Let me just pose a few questions (sparked by a conversation I had with a very liberal atheist today):
  1. What does it mean to be narrow-minded?
Well it could mean that one is on the “Narrow way” which few find instead of the wide path to perdition that many find and follow.
  1. Are Catholics narrow-minded for not condoning homosexual marriages? The obvious answer being no, how do we defend statement?
Not at all. Being Catholics we believe that Homosexuality is wrong. That is not narowminded, it is consistant.
As for defending the statement. This can be difficult when dealing with one who does not believe in God - but here goes.
Homosexuality is a disordered desire which simply means that this is not the way our natural bodies are intended to act. Sex, in the natural order of things is for pro-creation. Pleasure that is derived from the act is purely secondary. Therefore anything that disconnects the sexual act from proctreation is, by definition, disordered.
Things that are “disordered”, that is, things in which we place our joy that are not ordered to the Glory and service of God, distance us from God and therefore are to be avoided.
God is not served by disordered sexual activity, therefore disordered sexual activity is to be avoided.
  1. Does “separation of church and state” mean that you should not vote how you do because of what you believe religiously? If not, what other definition can we offer?
First of all I would like to see your friend point out where "seperation of Church and State is in the Constitution.
Second, Ask your friend whether he votes his conscience when he enters the voting booth. Each person, when voting,is expected to vote in the way they feel things should be. That is, if one candidate says balance budget and another says deficit budget we would like vote for the balanced budget because that is the way we believe it should be.
How our conscience is formed, whether by religious or secular means is not of consequence when we vote.
Offer your thoughts on any or all of these questions.
Hope the above helps

Peace
James

Before I begin, I should probably mention that I’m a liberal atheist who believes that everyone should be valued based on merit of character, rather than immutable facts. Obviously, this goes directly against the Catholic church, so I’ll try to put minimal bias into my answers. 🙂
  1. What does it mean to be narrow-minded?
To quote verbatim from a dictionary:
  1. having or showing a prejudiced mind, as persons or opinions; biased.
  2. not receptive to new ideas; having a closed mind.
  3. extremely conservative and morally self-righteous.
There’s not much more you can say from that. To be narrow-minded is to be closed to someone’s ideas, unwilling to accept that the world is changing around us and to be prejudiced a certain way.
  1. Are Catholics narrow-minded for not condoning homosexual marriages? The obvious answer being no, how do we defend statement?
To this I am sad to say YES.

For all of history, Christians have been condemning, killing, torturing those who were different from them. The principles stated in a 2000-something year old book can not and should not apply today. Many of the things written in the Bible are still not politically or morally acceptable, unless you think it’s okay to have your son’s eyes eaten out by various wild birds. (Proverbs 30:17)

I, as both an atheist and a student, believe science is the basis of and the reason for everything. If you want to make a scientific argument, you can’t exclude vital and obvious facts of science, and only choose the ones that appeal to your argument. I agree that the sex organs are scientifically designed for one another. Science has made it so that female eggs are able to get pregnant from male sperm. It allows for the continuance of life.

But science has also allowed for the creation of homosexuality. It occurs, making it a natural thing; it is from nature. Personally, I believe that homosexuality is science’s way to say “STOP HAVING BABIES.” Theoretically, homosexuals cannot produce children, therefore combating overpopulation. There *has *to be a reason why more and more people are coming out as homosexual. Things don’t just happen for no reason. Even your Bible says it. It’s becoming more politically acceptable to be homosexual in this day and age, and I think it’s a wonderful step towards progress.

Yes, there are homosexual people. Yes, they are in love and want to get unionized to each other. Yes, it’s close-minded to say that someone cannot be with the one they love because of an ancient book. Marriage is a church term. Union is a joining together of two people who love each other. To deny people of rights, of benefits just because they are born as homosexual is absolutely wrong. To tell someone they can’t* be who they are*, to me, is disgusting.
  1. Does “separation of church and state” mean that you should not vote how you do because of what you believe religiously? If not, what other definition can we offer?
No, because religion affects your beliefs, directly affecting your decision when it comes to voting. I think that separation of church and state means that religious figures have no divine rights over government. Priests cannot hold trial, deacons can’t write their own search warrant, etc. just because they’re “of the faith.”

But, unfortunately, church and state is still not completely separated.

LOL, that’s hilarious. Nature isn’t trying to stop overpopulation with homosexuality.

See:

One of the main reasons same-sex-attraction is becoming more common in our day is because of the breakdown of the family - the basic unit of society. Fatherless/Motherless homes, media/cultural representations of masculinity and femininity, high divorce rates, gender identity issues, etc. are just some of the causes.

I’m afraid it’s not your authority to explain the way nature works. Citing Catholic websites regarding homosexuality is obviously biased. Christianity has *seriously *flawed biological beliefs proved wrong by science, so I see no merit in their opinion on this issue.

There is no solid case for the cause of homosexuality at this current time, so you can’t blatantly state that homosexuality is caused by “gender identity issues, divorce rates, etc.” I’m as allowed to hold my opinion as you are yours. I think a part of being open-minded is to listen to others’ opinions.

I didn’t make the theory up, either. I’ve come to believe it after some research of my own.

Well, if you want to be open-minded, then you should be familiar with the other theories concerning homosexuality. I have come to support this theory based on my experiences with people who have same-sex-attraction and my own research. My studies in anthropology, sociology, cultural studies and critical theory reinforce my beliefs.

Also, science is not the basis of and the reason for everything. The knowledge we have gained from science is a result of human observation and experimentation. Science is the study of nature; nature is not science.

The knowledge we have from science is finite. We haven’t even gathered enough data about our own planet - only one of many in the universe. There are millions of undiscovered species; there are underwater/underground territories in the world that human eyes haven’t even seen yet.

What makes you think science can explain everything?

I am familiar with other theories of homosexuality, and I have come to believe the one I stated earlier. I’m not stating that it is the definitive cause of homosexuality, or that your opinion is not. It’s unarguably close-minded to dismiss someone’s opinions immediately by laughing at them. Especially when basing these opinions, in part, off a religion that is so biologically flawed.

The knowledge we have gained from science certainly is not exclusively from human research. It’s from observation of many things, big and small, that make up the known universe. I agree that we don’t know everything about the universe, and can probably never know. There are possibly infinite unexplored areas of science.

The Latin etymology of science is knowledge. Religion comes from Latin religare, which means to “tie fast.” In my atheistic opinion, religion is a way to quickly explain away the mysteries that life contains. Science is a way to explore them. While yes, there is no definitive proof of any god or scientific cause, it’s ridiculous to not study them further.

Alright, maybe I shouldn’t have scoffed at your opinion so quickly, but when you post on a Catholic website condemning Christians as killers and torturers, you certainly are not going to convince anyone into listening to your thoughts and opinions.

You also expressed your belief of homosexuality as naturally occuring in nature rather matter-of-factly so you are guilty of bias also.

Anyway, let’s try to keep things civil and peaceful and welcome to the site! I hope you find what you’re looking for. 😃

But, unfortunately, church and state is still not completely separated.
Boy, you must really love Islam, Princess, with their demand for the *unification *of mosque and state. They execute homosexuals, too–I don’t see any calls on this forum for that.

Maybe you could provide us with some links to posts you’ve put on Islamic websites criticizing *their *behavior.

Until then, you’ll have to forgive me if I dismiss you as just another whiner.

Interesting. I’ve never heard that the Church places any variable values on people. The Church holds all human life (all people, including homosexuals) to the highest value of all creation, under the heading of “the sanctity of human life”. Did you mean something different from what you stated here?
For all of history, Christians have been condemning, killing, torturing those who were different from them.
Sources please.

I, as both an atheist and a student, believe science is the basis of and the reason for everything.
Interesting. So you believe man is the basis of and the reason for everything. Science is a man-made mechanism used to study and investigate nature; it would not exist if not for humans. Did you mean “nature”?
I agree that the sex organs are scientifically designed for one another. Science has made it so that female eggs are able to get pregnant from male sperm. It allows for the continuance of life.
“Science has made…”? Again, do you mean “nature”? I’m sure this is what you’re meaning to say here. Regardless, I’m curious as to why you try to give non-intelligent things intelligent faculties (such as “making” things, and “allowing” other things). What is it, behind nature, that gives it the animation to “do” the things you are suggesting here?
But science has also allowed for the creation of homosexuality.
Once, again…nature, not science, right?
It occurs, making it a natural thing; it is from nature.
So, everything is acceptable? Murder, Rape, Incest, Adultery, Pornography, etc.? All these things “occur” too. As you would say, they’re “from nature”. Do you have any beef with murder? If not, why not?
Theoretically, homosexuals cannot produce children, therefore combating overpopulation.
Theoretically? Is there some other way in which homosexuals can produce children?
There *has *to be a reason why more and more people are coming out as homosexual. Things don’t just happen for no reason. Even your Bible says it. It’s becoming more politically acceptable to be homosexual in this day and age, and I think it’s a wonderful step towards progress.
I think it’s important to understand the distinction Christianity makes regarding homosexuality. The Church does not say that homosexuality is absolutely environmental, nor absolutely genetic. She acknowledges that the jury is still out on the precise origins of the homosexual disposition of people. The Church also does not say that homosexual temptation is wrong, but rather the sexual acting out of that temptation. Those who perhaps are born with a predisposition for homosexuality are called by God to live chastely, in much the same way others born with certain sinful temptations are called to live in a manner which helps them avoid them. Perhaps you believe this is an impossible request. But to a devout Christian, God makes all of it quite possible, and rewarding.
Yes, there are homosexual people. Yes, they are in love and want to get unionized to each other. Yes, it’s close-minded to say that someone cannot be with the one they love because of an ancient book.
No one say’s someone “cannot”. Anyone certainly “can” do whatever they desire. With consequences, of course. True Christians lobby for bans on legal gay unions because it is their right to do so, based on their beliefs that it fosters highly sinful lifestyles, contrary to the word of God. This is nothing different from an atheist supporting a ban on legalizing theft, because they believe it is “wrong”. Both have rights to lobby for whatever legal doctrines align with their beliefs
Marriage is a church term. Union is a joining together of two people who love each other.
So, “marriage is a church term”, and “union” is a …what? a nature term?

I don’t really understand what you’re trying to ask; do I agree with Islam? No, I don’t. This isn’t the Islam forum, and the religion of Islam was not involved in the discussion. I don’t really see how this is applicable. I’d be happy to give an explanation if you care to elaborate.

Interesting. I’ve never heard that the Church places any variable values on people. The Church holds all human life (all people, including homosexuals) to the highest value of all creation, under the heading of “the sanctity of human life”. Did you mean something different from what you stated here?
Yes, but you can’t deny that there is some apparent sexism in the church, mainly because women are not allowed to be Catholic preists. You could argue that they’re allowed to be nuns, but point blank, women are not seen as equals to men when it comes to religious teachings. It’s what Catholicism teaches, and it’s also illegal in my country; to hold jobs on the basis of sex, orientation, race, etc.

And to say that someone can’t enter heaven because they’re born as a homosexual is so wrong. That’s placing a value based on immutable facts, facts that a person cannot change. That teaches that if you live your life as a kind, just, giving, and loving person but happen to be a homosexual, you can’t enter heaven.
Sources please.
Are you kidding? The Crusades, the Inquisition, The 30 Years War, the wars between Protestants and Catholics, the Holy Wars, the persecution of pagans. Thosands, maybe millions, of people have been killed for this cause. And this isn’t even counting the murders that God committed.

Where does it say in this 2000-something year old book that everything written in it is supposed to be literally practiced in society?

It says this nowhere, which is my point. I’ve seen, heard of, and am related to right-wing Catholics who claim “everything in the Bible should be taken literally.” Obviously, times have changed and every single thing written in the bible is applicable.
Interesting. So you believe man is the basis of and the reason for everything. Science is a man-made mechanism used to study and investigate nature; it would not exist if not for humans. Did you mean “nature”? “Science has made…”? Again, do you mean “nature”? I’m sure this is what you’re meaning to say here. Regardless, I’m curious as to why you try to give non-intelligent things intelligent faculties (such as “making” things, and “allowing” other things). What is it, behind nature, that gives it the animation to “do” the things you are suggesting here?
Science is a fairly abstract concept, and it once again comes down to what you personally believe. I believe science is nature and nature is science; science being the study of the natural world. Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough. What I meant to say was that I believe the world has been designed to fix the problems presented in nature. When I look at anything in nature, the way cells function to continue life, or how photosynthesis occurs in such a perfect formula I find it so amazing how everything in the universe works in such a perfect cycle. And I think that most, if not every, occurance that develops in nature can be explain scientifically.
Once, again…nature, not science, right? So, everything is acceptable? Murder, Rape, Incest, Adultery, Pornography, etc.? All these things “occur” too. As you would say, they’re “from nature”. Do you have any beef with murder? If not, why not?
(Any particular reason why these were capitalized?)
Pornography, adultery, yes. Murder, rape, and incest, no.

I didn’t mean it quite as literally as you took it. I was talking about occurances in genetics and heredity, not human motives.
Theoretically? Is there some other way in which homosexuals can produce children?
Sure, invitro fertilization or a surrogate mother.
The Bible says that homosexuals are not permitted to enter heaven. (1 Cor. 6:9-10)
Those who perhaps are born with a predisposition for homosexuality are called by God to live chastely, in much the same way others born with certain sinful temptations are called to live in a manner which helps them avoid them. .
What makes them “sinful temptations?” Because they are called that by your god? I completely disagree with the discrimination against homosexuals. What if god has said “Blacks aren’t allowed to enter heaven.” Would you so blindly believe that because someone else believes it is right?
Perhaps you believe this is an impossible request. But to a devout Christian, God makes all of it quite possible, and rewarding.
How can it be rewarding to live your life pretending to be someone you’re not? As an atheist, I don’t believe in heaven and hell. You only get one life to live, why mess it up? To me, that’s just depressing.

No one say’s someone “cannot”. Anyone certainly “can” do whatever they desire. With consequences, of course. True Christians lobby for bans on legal gay unions because it is their right to do so, based on their beliefs that it fosters highly sinful lifestyles, contrary to the word of God.
It is their right, certainly, but is it right? What if the KKK lobbyed against blacks, to ban them from getting a job, because they believed, in good faith, that it was wrong with their moral code? How about the Nazis, who believed, in good faith, that the Jews should be killed? Just because something is driven by faith, it isn’t justified.
This is nothing different from an atheist supporting a ban on legalizing theft, because they believe it is “wrong”.
Of course there’s a difference! Theft is violating someone else, to take something that doesn’t belong to you. How does it affact YOUR life if a gay couple wants to be married? To equivocate homosexuality with theft is not just offensive, it’s downright ridiculous.
Both have rights to lobby for whatever legal doctrines align with their beliefs
Exactly, freedom of speech. I’m not arguing with this, I agree with it. xD
So, “marriage is a church term”, and “union” is a …what? a nature term?
A state term, a legal term. Gay couples should be allowed all the federal benefits a straight married couple is allowed. It is not the responsibility of the church to govern who gets married, it’s the responsibility of the state. I have a whole sphiel about the seperation of church and state marriage plan, but I’m chock-full of Nyquil and I’m not exactly equipped to type it atm.

How dark it is in your eyes! You words just made me , trembling and aflame.
you are not a true princess!
How can you say :"Things don’t just happen for no reason. Even your Bible says it. It’s becoming more politically acceptable to be homosexual in this day and age, and I think it’s a wonderful step towards progress. "
Oh, I want tell you how Bible say about it:

“So God created humankind in
his image,
in the image of God He created
them;
male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:27

“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.’ So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said:
‘This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called Woman,
for out of Man this one was
taken.’
Therefore a man shall leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.”
Genesis 2:18-24

See God created man and woman as husband and wife.
you say :"Even your Bible says it. It’s becoming more politically acceptable to be homosexual in this day and age, and I think it’s a wonderful step towards progress. "
Oh I want tell you what Bible say about it:

** “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; that is an abomination.
-Leviticus 18:22

“For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error.”
