For some reason lately I’ve been thinking a lot about consecration to Mary, or more accurately consecration to Jesus through Mary. I remember when I first came back to the Church skimming over it and now I have several questions that I hope some people with experience can help me with.
  1. Are consecration to Mary and consecration to her Immaculate Heart the same thing? if not which do de Montfort’s and Kolbe’s method deal with?
  2. Can one consecrate themselves directly to Jesus?
  3. Is there a difference between consecrating to Jesus and consecrating to Jesus’s Sacred Heart?
  4. I’ve heard people say that once you consecrate yourself to Mary you can’t offer prayers for other people ie. pray for a friend or family member because all your prayers and works are directed to Mary, is that true?
Thanks for any and all help with this. I’m really getting confused with the Sacred/ Immaculate Heart devotions/ consecrations and the consecrations to Jesus and Mary specifically.

Regarding the consecration to Mary it is actually consecration to Jesus through Mary. St Louis de Montfort makes this very clear. If you get the opportunity to read ‘True Devotion to Mary’ (under various titles) it is well worth it.

St. Louis de Montfort makes it clear that you can pray for friends, family and other intentions. You place those prayers into Mary’s hands and she does with them as she wills in accordance to her Son’s will.

Normally you offer any grace you would have received to Mary, even though it rightfully belongs to you, because Mary knows where best to apply that grace, whether to you or to someone else who needs it more than you. You can however, ask that grace be given to someone special, your own intention, as long as you understand that you give her the right to determine that it is better used for some other purpose, someone you might never have met or might not even know exists.

The treasury of grace which has been given to Mary by her son is infinite. There is plenty to go around and if we ask for a favor for a friend or loved one in faith, Mary is not likely to refuse.

But you can pray for individuals.

Don’t see the need to correct someone by saying the exact same thing they said…🤷😉

  1. Are consecration to Mary and consecration to her Immaculate Heart the same thing? if not which do de Montfort’s and Kolbe’s method deal with? It’s the same. Although, there is another method of consecration—33 Days to Morning Glory by Father Michael Gaitley–uses St Louis de Montfort, St Maximilian Kolbe, along with Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Blessed Pope John Paul II in guided daily meditations.
  2. Can one consecrate themselves directly to Jesus? Sure. Sacred Heart devotion.
  3. Is there a difference between consecrating to Jesus and consecrating to Jesus’s Sacred Heart? No or if there is, I’ve not heard of it…

Consecrated on Feast of the Assumption, August 15, 2013, a group of 28 people. 🙂

Thanks so much for all your answers they were helpful. I was talking to someone the other day and they mentioned that they were consecrated to both Jesus and Mary. I didn’t want to say anything, but it sounds wrong that one and “completely consecrate” themselves to more than one person, devotion, etc.

Am I wrong in thinking that? Or can you consecrate yourself to Jesus or the Sacred Heart of Jesus after you’ve done the consecration to Mary?

I’m consecrated to both. I did the 5 First Saturdays-Immaculate Heart of Mary, followed by the 9 First Fridays-Sacred Heart Devotion, then Total Consecration to Mary.

I think, you’re misunderstanding Consecration to Mary. When we consecrate ourselves to our Blessed Mother, we ask her to use us for the greater glory of God, lead us to Jesus, or if we stray, lead us back to Him. It’s always about Jesus.
