So I grew up Evangelical and am looking to convert to the Catholic faith as I am loving the structure. So I have read a few books and have a maybe difficult question about angels. Are guardian angels created when each individual human is born? And if that is the case I have read that angels have a right to choose between God and Satan. So what happens to that human if there guardian angel decide to rebel?

This is coming from a pure interest as from what I read we as humans can talk to angles on a spiritual level. In my 12 years I have never know angles besides they exist.

I can’t answer your question, myself, but I can offer two good Catholic books on the angels:
  1. The Angels and Their Mission by Jean Danielou, S.J., and
  2. Angels and Demons: What Do We Really Know about Them? by Peter Kreeft

Thank you for those references. I actually just read angels and demons and what we really know about them and that’s what sparked this question. I will however look into the other book as well.

It’s my understanding that God already created all the angels he needs and they all already made a choice whether to stay with him or go with Satan.

Therefore God doesn’t create new angels each time new humans are born. God does task an angel with the guardian angel task when the human is born, however the angel was already in existence and had already chosen Team God.

The angels were created at the beginning of time, before us

We’ll I think that’s where my human brain can’t see past. I would imagine like all warfare especially in spiritual warfare the devil is not just after us but trying to recruit any angel he can get to strengthen numbers. With him being one of the top angels in the chain of command. I might need to read more about the war in heaven.

According to Fr. Ripperger, our guardian angel is assigned at the moment of conception.

Guardian Angels cannot and will not rebel.
Once the Angels were created they made their mind up whether to Serve GOD or not.
They do not live in a temporal mode like us, they are spirit beings that can see GOD and see us at the same time. Read Jesus’s description of them in Matthew 19:10.
Also the “war in Heaven” is not going on. It is a done deal, it ended with the fall of Lucifer when he and all that chose to be with him were expelled from Heaven. Again Jesus refers to this event in past tense in the Gospels.
Peace!

Are guardian angels created when each individual human is born?
The Fourth Lateran Council (1215), Constitution (Canon) 1, seems to indicate that all angels were created before the creation of human beings, saying, in part, emphasis mine:
The Father is from none, the Son from the Father alone, and the holy Spirit from both equally, eternally without beginning or end; the Father generating, the Son being born, and the holy Spirit proceeding; consubstantial and coequal, co-omnipotent and coeternal; one principle of all things, creator of all things invisible and visible, spiritual and corporeal; who by his almighty power at the beginning of time created from nothing both spiritual and corporeal creatures, that is to say angelic and earthly, and then created human beings composed as it were of both spirit and body in common. (source)
Similarly, the First Vatican Council (1870), Session 3, Dogmatic Constitution on the Catholic Faith, chapter 1, says, in part, emphasis mine:
  1. This one true God, by his goodness and almighty power, not with the intention of increasing his happiness, nor indeed of obtaining happiness, but in order to manifest his perfection by the good things which he bestows on what he creates, by an absolutely free plan, together from the beginning of time brought into being from nothing the twofold created order, that is the spiritual and the bodily, the angelic and the earthly, and thereafter the human which is, in a way, common to both since it is composed of spirit and body [10]. As far as we have been made aware, all Angels were created at one time.

Angels had their will fixed after they choose God or not. Switching teams is nice for movies, is impossible in reality.

The probable doctrine of the Catholic Church is that the good guardian angel assigned to a person remains the protective spirit of a person until the person’s bodily death.

See: Fr. Hardon Archives - Catholic Catechism on the Angels

Angels can see the Face of God, of Truth Itself. They know the goodness of God and the ugliness of sin. They will never switch places. And neither will we, wherever we end up.
