Today Pope John and Pope John Paul were canonized as Saints in the Roman Catholic Church

Questions?

all who are in Heaven are Saints -is this correct -so one’s devout Grandparents can be Saints ?

We can pray to the Saints to interceede with Christ for us is this correct?

In the RC doctrine of Purgatory those in Purgatory are not saints are they? -though they will become saints?

in the RC Church declaring a person a Saint is ensuring that the person is in Heaven and not in PUrgatory is this correct?

Who is a Saint in one Church may not be a Saint in another for example Archbishop Cranmer is a saint in ours but certainly not in the roman catholic Church?

the Blessed VIrgin is also a Saint?

ANgels are not Saints? what about St. Michaels and St. raphael?

yep, like I can ask u to pray for me …we like to go to our living brothers and sisters in heaven because we know they have favor with God…sin is no longer an obstacle between them and God.

We can not publically declare someone is in heaven outside of the catholic church (although the church knows that non-catholics may be in heaven)…since we’re making a declaration on the position of someone’s some…we need to make sure and a non-Catholic would not be a clear cut case for us to put that type of assurance on.

ANgels are not Saints? what about St. Michaels and St. raphael?
They are given the honorary title of Saint in that they are spirits that are holy and in heaven and intercede for us.

Yes to all of your questions.

In terms of angels, they too have the Beatific Vision. But are not saints in the way humans become.

AFA St Michael, etc, remember the word saint comes from santus, meaning holy. Michael and all the holy angels can be described as santus, thus saint

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Since Ephesians 4:11, 12 clearly refers to imperfect mortal followers of Christ, in the RCC how does a Canonized deceased Saint differ from a Saint still living (and not yet perfected)?

Are there Bible verses or Sacred tradition/ECF writings/Church Councils that support canonization?

Does sainthood mean an individual was never in purgatory BEFORE being declared by the Church to be a saint, but instead had gone straight to heaven?
 
A kinda formal definition of a Saint is someone who live a life of virtue to an Heroic degree.

We believe one can go through a purgatory either in this life or in the next. Every trail, pain and suffering born out of love for God in this life purifies the mind, heart and soul of an individual. So in this sense…EVERYONE has to go through a purgation.

When the person is declared a Saint. It is a statement of fact that at that moment we have certainty that they are currently in Heaven with God and are in no need of purifying.

In his book, on Making Saints, author Kenneth L. Woodward notes the following:

"A saint is always someone through whom we catch a glimpse of what God is like—and of what we are called to be. Only God “makes” saints, of course. The church merely identifies from time to time a few of these for emulation. "

If only God makes saints then wouldn’t only God know if they are in Heaven?

Yes we are all called to be saints, we were made to be a saint. Upon entering heaven we become saints because our soul is pure and clean from sin.

Yes the saints like Our Mother Mary is constantly praying and interceding for us to Jesus trying to secure us eternal life, because the saints are already in heaven they are always trying to help us here on earth.

The souls in purgatory will eventually enter heaven and become saints yes. When a person dies and there is some stain of sin on there soul they have to be purified before entering heaven. Although if a person dies in a state of mortal sin eternal damnation is the result. Every person differs in how long a period they will have to stay in purgatory. A soul in purgatory knows they will eventually see God and thinks on nothing else.

Yes they are a saint only when they enter heaven.

Saints are Catholic because it is the church Jesus established.

Mary is above the angels and saints as She is the mother of Jesus, and crowned queen of heaven by Jesus Himself.

Gazelam, remember you are using the KJV which is known to be a poor translation in many ways, and came about in the 17th century.

Take a look at other translations as well. 🙂

No, that doesn’t equate. We’re all called to be Saints. And yes, God makes saints…and He made trees too. There are Saints currently walking among us. They may be recognized due to their heroic virtue in this life.

Yes, they have an express pass to Heaven because they are righteous, justified and deemed worthy. Two examples are Moses and Elijah who appeared to Jesus at the Transfiguration, this was witnessed by Saints Peter, James & John.

The declaration by the Church after the fact is because the Church requires spiritual guidance and evidence e.g. Miracles attributed to that person before making a formal declaration of Sainthood. The ‘miracles’ are then investigated and monitored by secular and non-secular Doctors/psychologists etc. The miracle must be of a particular kind i.e. an instantaneous cure of a incurable disease.

The whole process can take dozens or even hundreds of years before one is declared a Saint.

Do we refer to the worthy from the Old Testament as Saints? I’m thinking we should but have never heard any Catholic refer to them as such.

For example St Elijah, St Moses, St Abraham etc
 
The Catholic Church uses a formal process to determine who is a Saint. First, that person’s life is thoroughly investigated. If deemed virtuous enough, the person is said to be a servant of God. If they’ve exhibited heroic levels of virtue in their life, they are considered venerable. To become saints, however, they need to have performed two miracles after death.

Toward that end, a Vatican-appointed Miracle Commission sifts through hundreds or even thousands of miraculous claims. Typically, the commissions are composed of theologians and scientific experts, secular and non-secular.

Nearly all, or 99.9 percent of these are medical miracles. They need to be spontaneous, instantaneous and complete healing. Doctors have to say, ‘We don’t have any natural explanation of what happened,’.

A woman whose breast cancer was cured wouldn’t qualify, for instance, if she was given a 10 percent chance of survival — she would need to be told there was no chance of survival before any divine intervention, said the Rev. Stephan Bevans, a theology professor at the Catholic Theological Union.

In 2010, former Pope Benedict XVI confirmed that John Paul II had posthumously healed a French nun suffering from Parkinson’s disease. The church recently confirmed a second miracle, when a Costa Rican woman’s brain injury spontaneously healed after praying to John Paul II.

Miracles can be confirmed only if the healed person prayed solely to one person, such as John Paul II, during their ordeal. That way, there can be no mix-up when determining which person in heaven interceded on their behalf.

yea I hear ya in your second to last post about the old testament people not being declaired Saints.

I’ve heard several priests at several different moments being asked this question and the answer was the same…yes, we would consider them saints however we have just gotten to calling them saints.

We don’t call mother Mary a Saint either…but we know through dogmatic fact that she is In heaven.

Before the formal process of canonization, it was done simply by world renown. Someones heroic life stories of virtue and holiness spread and people would begin calling them saints.

I guess the idea of pointing out saints was out of necessity. The world needed to know how holiness existed in this world. Mary, Moses, Abraham, Elijia…those names/stories have already been told… I guess some are so renown that it wasin’t necessary to point them out.
