Questions Re. Little Green "Ordo" Book

I’ll be assisting the sacristans in setting up for the Mass one night each week until we get some more volunteers and went through my first training. It all seems straight forward but the biggest anxiety I have surrounds the Ordo and setting up the sacramentary correctly for the various readings.

The lead sacristan showed me the little blue or green “Ordo” book and it is a little confusing. I’m sure I’ll pick up on how to use it but to that end, wonder if anyone would care to comment on how to intepret the various indications of readings, optional memorials, obligatory memorials, symbols, acronyms, etc. It all seems like morse code to me.

I would also like to purchase my own and wonder why there are different ones for different states/diocese? Is it because there are different feasts and memorials observed?

Can anyone comment on the quality of the copy shown at zieglers.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=16670 ? Is this what I need?

And as I always ask… what else do I need to know?

Someone else can take the rest, but as for the reason for the different local versions, sometimes there is things on the local calendar, such as a blessed from your own diocese, or the dedication of your cathedral (which I believe is celebrated as a solemnity).

Yes, that is what you would need. Although, you could just use the one in the sacristy.
If you order one for yourself, get next years, the 2012. The new liturgical year is starting soon.

Just look up the day. It will tell you if it is a memorial, feast day, solemnity, etc. It will tell you the colors of the vestments. It could have two colors. Sometimes the priest has a choice of doing say Ordinary time (green) or maybe a martyrs feast day (red). If the priest wants you to help set up the Roman Missal for him there is also the indication of the preface to use. Usually the priest does this himself. The Ordo also indicates the readings to be put out on the ambo. Also, during lent and Advent there can be other useful information that pertains to setting up the sanctuary for the service.
