I would like to know where I can find an authentic Jubilee Medal of St Benedict, struck or authorized by the Abbey of Monte Cassino.
From various sources online, there is a distinction between the “ordinary” medal–many designs created by the faithful and whose origins are unknown–and the Jubilee Medal first struck in 1880 and distributed by the Abbey of Monte Cassino. The ordinary medal is enriched with blessings and indulgences by the Church in the past, and the Jubilee medal was further enriched by Pope Pius IX on the fourteenth centenary of St. Benedict’s birth. According to some sources, a medal with the Jubilee design is still an ordinary medal if it is not from Monte Cassino.
Is the medal still being struck today at the orignial home and final resting place of St Benedict and St Scholastica? If not, is there an “authorized” manufacturer commissioned by the Abbey of Monte Cassino?
Some medals are marked “Ex SM Casino MDCCCLXXX”, in others the name is spelled “Cassino” while others just have “M Cassino”. Which one is the authorized jubilee design?
In Dom Gueranger’s book “Medal or Cross of St Benedict” there is mention of the presence of IHS (Holy Name of Jesus) on the jubilee medal. I do not see it there now. The author seem to refer to the location of the word “PAX” (Peace) on today’s medals. Does anyone have information on this?
Thanks for any information you can give.
