That makes sense. I know why so many CAtholics do not know their faith: they never learn it. Now that may be because they were not taught it well (which is often the case) or because they did not leanr it on thier own (again, often the case). It just seems like Islam lends itself to poor interpretations if you do not study it correctly.

Well just like most Catholics probably don’t study their faith, most Muslims don’t either. They just do what they are told, from when they are little, without knowing why.

This example, Ishmael and Isaac, can be answered in several ways. First, there is an ethnic bias by Arabian Muslims to say it was Ishmael and that is one way the Jews corrupted the scripture. the second way is that anti-semetic groups in the Muslim people want to show that Ishmael is the true heir to Abraham. A third option is that those who claim it want to feel important

The statement that the Jews corrupted their scripture in this regard specifically is based on the statement of an early Jewish convert to Islam, and not based on rigorous study of Jewish scriptures. And really I think the corruption was only implied regarding which son was sacrificed.

But everytime I listen to a Muslim scholar talk about Isaac and Ishmael, they unanimously declare that WHO was sacrificed is not relevant to Islamic theology, but that there were blessings in BOTH the sons, and they BOTH need to be honored and respected as prophets in Islam.

And in fact, Muslims are taught to revere all God’s messengers and prophets without discrimination, so to say that Isaac or Ishmael was more loved or better, would sort of be against another teaching in the Qur’an.

And as I think I mentioned before, I’m not aware of any authentic Islamic teaching about a covenant with Ishmael–ever.

Just a word of caution, to both Muslims and Catholics: sometimes, converts to your faith from Judaism, who sometimes have an axe to grind against their former co-religionists, can then become the worst enemy of your own religion, their new faith.

In the past (and sometimes even today), some Jews will leave Judaism and join either Christianity (usually Catholicism, it provides the most shock appeal in their minds, to other Jews), or Islam (due to the Mideast situation, it also provides good shock appeal), and will tell you guys things that are not quite true about Judaism, in an effort to stir up hatred against their former co-religionists.

There were Jews in the Middle Ages who converted to Catholicism and did this…Nicholas Donin comes to mind, as well as Burgos and a few others. Some say the Grand Inquisitor, Tomas de Torquemada was also a former Jew with a grudge against his people, hence his zeal for prosecuting conversos.

This is why I warn Catholics and Muslims, do not be so quick to celebrate a Jewish convert; sometimes they converted for reasons of their own.

There is an especially sordid case in Israel, of a Jewish man who converted to militant Islam, took his wife and kids along, and now praises suicide bombers (I kid you not, I wish I was!)

Well my point was really that it’s actually not important, critical, or even explicit in authentic Islamic teachings.

I should have said: Which Bible translation is the most accurate one, since we in Quran also have different translations.

If you were to say that no religious man could come from outside of Isaac’s line, then you would be suggesting that only the Jews are entitled to blessings from God, and that only the Jews have received prophets and revelation… denying all of mankind, essentially.
