Okay, here goes. I’m 17 years old and want to be a English teacher in Japan. I’m also intrested in becoming a nun but, am faced with a Pagan family that gets upset if I mention it. I am not allowed to commit to any one religion but, pray, read scripture, and listen to gospel music. Do you have any suggestions on what I can work on privately, and what I need to know?
 
Keep praying and reading scripture! Are you a baptized Catholic? If not, you may want to look into RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) at a local church.

I’m not sure how much education you have had in regards to the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Cathlic Church is a good place to start. There are also online resources such at here at CAF and others. Try the Catholic Information Service which is a website run by the Knights of Columbus. They offer free educational material. There is also EWTN TV network and Catholics Come Home which gives information on becomming Catholic or returning to the faith.

Take time in your discernment on becomming a nun. At 17, you have plenty of time to learn and pray about your vocation. Trust in God and He will lead you on the right path.

Take a look at the Gospels and New Testament in general as well - might be easier also than starting with Catechism.
Try reading also - I found the book 'Seven storey mountain by Thomas Merton a very fascinating journey for someone who was not a believer for most of his young life. Also if you can find 'Jesus lives!" by Emiliano Tardiff (might be available in online stores) etc, or Diary of St Faustina etc these are just sugggestions - plenty of good books out there. Maybe look for some Catholic friends as well?
 
Unfortunately, I’m not baptized. It’s not allowed in my family untill age 18. I have gone to a Christian private school for two years and various churches, as well as a homeschool center up until 7th grade. In the school we had Bible class everyday and we mostly focused on the New Testament. We also had chapel on Wednesday’s.

Previous posters have given excellent advice… to add a few thoughts here…
your local library should have resources available:
Things such as Basic Catechisms
Bibles
Lives of the Saints
Church History

For someone who perhaps is starting from scratch and whose background perhaps does not have a basic background in
Christianity
I would suggest:
  1. Contact a priest and ask if he has a simple catechism
    he should be able to provide you with one or where to get one that would be readable and perhaps be a bridge to the official full version.
    [explain you cant convert now and are looking for something
    small and readable…if you need to worry about size that is]
    When I converted I used two catechisms myself
    [The full one is the Cathechism of the Catholic Church]
    Then a more readable one such as Teachings of Christ
    or others available from a Catholic Bookstore]
  2. Get a full Catholic Bible.[again you can read one at the library… sometimes parishs will have paperback ones for nominal fees
    Most RCIA programs in the US will use the New American version. If the Bible is completly new to you I would suggest start reading the new testement and for a [short overview] of Early Christianity read the gospel of Luke and then the Book of Acts.
  3. From there keep praying…
  4. On TV the ministry from EWTN is a valuable resource especially the program journey home and the rock as those deal with converts to the faith and with young catholic adults and their journey.
  5. There are many online resources available … in fact this sight has many links to help you;

it has links to catechisms, e cards, saints of the day, and many other things which may be of interest to you,

[BTW if you are going to attend college?? There may be a Newman center on campus which will help you connect with other catholics]

In a year you will be considered and adult by law and you can make your own life decisions, but bear in mind to be independent, you have to be independent, so for know work on getting the education and preparation you will need for your life’s work.

Well you will need a university degree in anything for that one. The degree is the requirement to get a work visa.

Also Ive heard but am not quite sure that you have to have been Catholic for at least two years to be considered for entry into a religious order.

Since you mention Japan could you please include an intention in your prayers for the end of abortion here?🙂
