I’m feeling that the CAF is a castle, and I’m a knight looking for a fight (not against flesh and blood, of course!) This castle, however, is well protected. There’s not a whole lot of spiritual warfare going on, except, perhaps, that of usurpers dressed in wool.

So what’s a knight of the Round CAF Table to do? I’m thinking road trip. You know, a quest! Only problem is that I’m not sure where to go. Anyone know of any Non-Catholic forums where there are thoughtful and respectful dialogs to engage, and demonic dragons behind the scenes to slay?

“To convert somebody, go and take them by the hand and guide them.”-
St. Thomas Aquinas

Before I start, I am not saying that you shouldn’t go to other sites and defend the Catholic faith, I just want to let you know some tips i’ve picked up over the years.

After years of arguing with people on religion I can proudly say that arguing (defending and then attacking the other guys beliefs) never works.

Arguing with someone can’t work simply because it always allows the person you are arguing with, the chance to tapout and say, “well, I don’t know EVERYTHING about my faith, let me go ask my pastor.” - I call it going into the hedgehog position.

The only way to put rumors and lies to rest, is if they are asked to you, or posted in an open discussion. You should respond, and don’t strike back at them, that will make them go into the hedgehog position. If you don’t make a crack at them, they will actually want to see your reasoning, and maybe after a while, may actually read what you said and think about it. You won’t get as much of an adrenaline boost out of it, but it is far better to defend rather than attack(the best offense is a good defense).

Unfortunately, I do not know of any non catholic forums. The ones I use to go to either are no longer operating, not allowing conversations on other religions, or do not let any Catholics in.

RRF:

Agreed. It’s too easy to win an argument and lose a soul. Not looking for a fight, just an exchange of ideas. Asking questions, I’ve found, is the best way of getting around
a debate and into a meeting of minds.

👍

I looked around some forums before joining this one.

physicsforums.com/ has threads for kids doing their homework plus scientists and engineers helping each other, but scroll down to the lounge and you’ll find philosophy and relationships threads. They seem quite an affable bunch, and there are Christians there. As long as you’re meeting rather than trying to convert minds, you won’t get badly gored.

At the other end of the scale, abovetopsecret.com is full of conspiracy threads and the like, and seems to be mainly younger people. Beware of the Troll of Paranoia, the Outrage of Lousy Education (seriously) and the Specter of Stunning Stupidity.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
Minstrel: [singing] Bravely bold Sir Robin rode forth from Camelot. He was not afraid to die, oh brave Sir Robin. He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways, brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin. He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp, or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken. To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away, and his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Robin. His head smashed in and heart cut out, and his liver removed, and his bowels unplugged…
Sir Robin: That’s, uh, that’s enough music for now, lads… looks like there’s dirty work afoot.
Edited so as not to be banned from CAF.

Thanks, Inocente. I’ll keep my eye out for them, but I ain’t afraid of no Specter!

CARM is a pretty unreasonable place. If you wish to defend the faith and strive to bring others to it, I recommend doing it in person. And remember, charity (true charity, not false compassion), is more significant for bringing people to Christ than crushing opponents and slaying dragons.

As for CARM…you better go in full armour 😃
Indeed, it’s more of a slog than a battle. If you point out a fallacy, they often just deny the intelligibility of the world and deny reason as a useless idea.
Know Scripture is a must.

But I wonder how they can justify reasoning from Scripture?

The place just hurts my head.

You’ve put me in the mood for that movie again. I gotta pull out the DVD and watch it this weekend.

It’s more fun to watch if you get two halves of a coconut and ride along!

Sounds like my kind of siege! Can’t wait to mix words with those dirty Frenchmen!

I commend you, sir knight, for dealing with these individuals with patience, logic, and charity. It takes every power of will in my body not to register and digitally hit these numbskulls over the head with a heavy book. Stay strong, but I know my limits, and I will stay within the confines of our warm, comfortable castle.
