We’ve used a certain brand of quick lighting charcoal for years. They’ve always lit very quickly when touched with a match or one of those commercial fire sticks. Lately, for some reason, some of the charcoal just won’t burn. I find this odd. Could there be some reason for this to be happening?

Thanks for any thoughts.

What does this have to do with the Liturgy and Sacraments of the Church??

Same happens where I am. Financial economies most likely reason i.e. ‘cheap’ charcoal.

paduard.

Harold is talking about the charcoal used in the thurible for incense.

It probably got exposed to too much humidity or moisture. Store it in a dry place and don’t order so much in advance so it doesn’t sit around for long periods of time.

Yes, sorry, I should have made clear that I was speaking about the charcoal in the thurible. And that was my hunch as well: that the weather/climate had something to do with it.

Thanks for the advice. It is appreciated.

The salt peter probably got compromised with humidity. Try lighting a candle and hold the charcoal over it, it should take.

And say a prayer to St. Florian while you are at it…
tsk…tsk…tsk…:tsktsk: It will never catch fire that way.

Pray to St. Florian to extinguish fires.

Pray to St. Lawrence when lighting charcoal.

(What about a prayer to St Blaise?)

We’ve got a brand that we’ve been using for years, somehow the last batch doesn’t light, it pops and explodes all over the place. Thinking about a refund.

I agree with what others have said—probably a humidity issue. One of our churches is so damp the charcoal has to be stored in an airtight jar or it never lights no matter how long you hold it over a candle.

If it’s truly unusable (and it sounds like it is), yeah, I’d send it back. Might be a manufacturing defect on that batch.

Airtight jar? Great advice.

Thanks.
