Catechism of the Catholic Church said:
**1866 **Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called “capital” because they engender other sins, other vices. They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.

I would say that it can be a mortal sin since it is a vice. I may be wrong though.

I think it really depends.

If you see an attractive man/woman walking on the other side of the street and you feel lust for that person, but then correct yourself, maybe say a little prayer and then move on, I’d say it’s venial. It was a compulsion that you got control of. Lust is something we can all experience out of weakness but not necessarily something we always say “yes” to.

If, however, you see that same attractive man/woman and you let yourself think about him or her all day, or later that night before bed, you are saying “yes” to Lust: mortal sin. You are even putting yourself in the near occasion of sin, as such obsessive lustful ponderings could lead you to sin sexually.

There’s a difference between experiencing a passing thought and giving in to that thought, though both would be experiences of lust.

Quick lust, I was thinking, isn’t that sort of the norm? Or is slow lust more delightful and something to aim for? Then of course reading your question I saw, ah, quick question ABOUT lust. No need for my experience in these matters.

Ah well… I have a review of an excellent short story, one that Esquire Magazine has listed as one of the top 75 that all men should read (I’m sure they mean women as well).

It’s a Ray Carver short story called “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” and I have found it to be a just a wonderful, thoughtful piece. You can find it here, worth your time:
