Quick question about receiving communion

so, over the years ive heard different things, but when i’ve confessed that i had received communion knowing that i had committed the sins of pornography and masturbation the priest told me that i should receive communion anyway because those graces will help me defeat those sins…the priest acknowledge that i had went to confession on the soonest occasion bc confession wasnt offered before mass. anyway, its happend again, i’ve received communion…is this a mortal sin…i am going to confession tomorrow at 7am, which is the soonest that i can go…

Receiving communion with an unconfessed mortal sin on your conscience is the serious sin of sacrilege.

Sacrilege consists in profaning or treating unworthily the sacraments and other liturgical actions, as well as persons, things, or places consecrated to God. Sacrilege is a grave sin especially when committed against the Eucharist, for in this sacrament the true Body of Christ is made substantially present for us. (CCC 2120)

Of course, it is possible that you did not actually commit a mortal sin (see the three requirements for mortal sin). Either way, you should confess all the above at the very next possible opportunity.

In the future, just don’t take communion if you are in doubt as to whether you have committed a mortal sin. Or, seek out the priest for a confession prior to the service–many priests will allow this. Remember, it is not a sin to forgo communion–my priest recommends forgoing confession simply if we aren’t focusing well on Christ that particular mass–but it it is a serious sin to accept communion with an unconfessed mortal sin on your conscience.

Also, let me say that while your priests are correct that the Holy Eucharist will help you defeat sins of impurity, they were plainly wrong in saying that you could watch porn, receive communion, and confess later. Resolve to immediately confess every mortal sin, even if you have to hunt down a priest (learn all the confession times in Churches near you). Not only will this keep you in compliance with your faith, but it will also actually help you overcome your impurity. It is much harder to fall if you recognize that you must the immediately go to confession and tell someone about it.

If the priest really said that, I would look for a new priest. Maybe even write your bishop. That is just incorrect.

While true that recieving the Eucharist can help sustain and nurture your grace; it can’t sustain and nurture grace that isn’t there, nor can it restore the grace that is missing because of mortal sin. That’s why we have reconciliation.

Let’s not be too quick to condemn the priest. What he said was to the OP, in the context of his confession, based on what he understood and concluded from what the OP told him. He may have concluded that, in this instance, for this person, that the conditions necessary for mortal sin were not present. Therefore, the OP could receive Holy Communion without committing sacrilege.

This is a very important reason that we should not, as one very senior poster here always says, “Monday-morning quarterback” our confessions or discuss them with others. Folks, we weren’t there. OP, if you had questions about what the priest said, you should go back and discuss your questions with him so he can explain his line of thinking to you.

Yes by it being “seriopus matter”

No by virtue of the fact that as STATED you were not sure [positive] that it would be a Mortal sin, which is one of the three requirements fo a sin to be “Mortal”

Get to Confesion at the absolute earliest time, consider calling and making an appointment outside of normal hours. YES it’s THAT IMPORTANT.
