Quick Question from a Tiber Swimmer

Hello everyone.

I was at morning Mass yesterday, and I’m not sure what’s behind something my priest did right before Mass began.

Before the entrance antiphon, he walked over to the side where there is a very tall (taller than me, including its large stand) unlit candle with several Christological symbols on it (there was a “cross” outline with five “nails” stuck in the wax – symbolizing the Five Wounds, I assume – a Greek alpha and omega, and a few others). He then picked it up and placed it on the steps in front of the altar, then left it there, and Mass continued as usual.

I’d like to know why he did so; I’m not terribly familiar with the liturgy yet (I’ve just recently gotten pretty secure in knowing the liturgical progression of daily and Sunday Mass).

If there’s any more information I can give to help, I’ll give it a try.

Just curious. I probably wouldn’t have a chance to ask him until Sunday. 🙂
 
Maybe there was a baptism or other sacramental occasion that day that he needed it for. As the wikipedia article states it is also used for funerals so my vote would be something funeral related that he wouldnt have much time to get ready for after mass so he moved it before.

Anyway you are very attentive and thats the main thing. 👍
 
The Paschal candle is used during Masses in the Easter season (which is past for this year), at baptisms, and at funerals. Perhaps a baptism or funeral was scheduled and he was setting up a little early?
