On Sundays a priest comes to say Mass in the prison chapel, and several officers are assigned for security purposes. When my friend is assigned to this post, is his obligation fulfilled, or does it not count since technically he is being paid to be there? I said that I thought it did but wasn’t 100% sure. It better count, I am paid to be where I am on Sunday morning, and so is our pastor and our deacon. When my duties include accompanying persons at Mass (RCIA, confirmation candidates etc), I am technically “on duty” even when assisting at Mass. My pastor has also assured me, even when my full attention may be distracted (supervising children etc) I am still fulfilling my Mass obligation.I . The only exception would be someone who volunteers to cook the pancakes for the breakfast downstairs after Mass or the upstairs nursery parents.
