I just got back from a week-long vocational retreat with the Camaldolese of Monte Corona (in Ohio).

We arise at 3:30 and eat breakfast at around 7:15. For the most part, that’s a-ok by me.

But it tends that around 5 or so, and lasting a while, my stomach feels very unsettled and acidic. Does this happen with anyone else? I only ask because I’m concerned slightly with developing an ulcer over time, since I really don’t know much about it.

Now I’m an ascetic person, and I don’t mind discomfort or pain too much, and love that it can be offered up for the souls in Purgatory. I’m not even against corporal mortification although I do not really practice any, save minor things (fasting, being a little cold or hot instead of using climate control, etc…). I just get nervous when it comes to something that could potentially cause a health issue. That’s an issue that is avoidable and could cost me or, if I become a religious, my cloister a lot of money.

Do you regular fasters who don’t eat breakfast for a while get this period of acidity, unsettledness? And have you had problems or ever heard of someone or been recommended to do something else? I often think just a little glass of milk would help, but if it’s not an actual health concern and it’s just discomfort, that’s fine.

Thanks. 🙂

Commendations on your retreat and your offered sacrifices. The Poor Souls are so grateful!

So far, I have not noticed any physical discomforts while fasting. Grumpiness, yes!

Maybe a bit of plain bread or toast would help. You have to take basic care of yourself.

If you like, join the Fasting group (link is below).

For more info on fasting, I recommend www.e5men.org to any and all, newcomers and veterans alike.

God bless.

👍👍👍

And you can drink some water when you feel discomfort.

Finally, and most importantly, never forget, especially on days of fasting or abstinance but also on all days,(though I presume you are doing it)

Never forget to say the grace before and after meals.

Thanks for all of the advice. Thanks also for the link to e5men. It’s very noble!

Try mixing about a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. It’s great for settling the stomach and has a number of other health benefits as well. Because a teaspoon of baking soda has no caloric content, it wouldn’t be considered to be breaking your fast.

Thank you, I will try with hot water, then with baking soda the next time, and start to look at the results and see how I’m feeling. Again, it is not immensely troubling, but I just wonder if it will eventually cause some sort of ulceration over time.

Pax Christi!

Tonight at midnight Eastern I begin a fast for all prisoners, especially a friend of mine. I work third shift; I’m not used to it yet, nor a midnight-to-midnight fast.

Your prayers and encouragement are requested.

All are welcome at the group, The Fasting Group (link below).

God bless.
