Quick question… Is there anyone here who was struggling before in lust, you know, the porn and stuff, and stopped already? Like stopped for good. Just want to ask if how did you do it? It might help me.

Thank you and God bless us all…

I think for those who struggle with this (and there are many, you’re certainly not alone), the stop is always a bit tentative - the temptation continues and can plague those trying to break free. The key is mastering resistance to the temptation. Pray. Frequently. Confess. Often. Make use of every weapon of spiritual warfare at your disposal. You can - and will, eventually - handle this with His grace. Don’t beat yourself up; don’t get discouraged. Keep working at it, and be honest with yourself and a good confessor.

Pray the rosary daily with the intention of turn yourself from every sin. Trust the Mother of God. Make a radical decision and block everything this very instant. I use the K9 Web Protection (It’s very good for blocking, but sometimes my pc has a blue screen and have to restart). I also made a rule in my e-mail account to send some e-mails direct to my trash, as I still receive propagand of porn.
Cut everything, but be aware that there’ll be many temptations as your will was weakened and your brain is demaged.

I really hate ever coming across any type of porn as it destroyed my relationship with God and many times my mind transforms something pure into perversion.

The saints have pretty much unanimous advice - run away from the occasion of the sin.

Mortifying your body in other ways also helps to train it and to distract it.

Cold showers. Fasting. Less sleep. The body seeks to avoid pain more than it seeks to obtain pleasure.

Prayer and the sacraments are also vital. You also might try some extended prayer whenever you can’t otherwise remove yourself from an occasion of sin - such as praying the rosary… It will repel you from the thought of self-abuse, as you will be disgusted by the idea. Keeping devotionals in places you normally face temptation might also help (like a crucifix by your bed).

Also, put the computer in an open room and leave it there. Consider a program like Covenant Eyes and getting someone to be your accountability partner.

NEVER go looking for programs or pictures that are sexual in nature or contain anything that could be easily sexualized by yourself. (For example, if you watch HBO, maybe it’s time to stop.) If you come across one, move along quickly and refocus your attention.

When you feel your sensuality begin to rise, physically get up and move around. Go for a walk, maybe a run.

Avoid alcohol, especially around the opposite sex.

You have to put distance between yourself and the occasion of this sin, or you will not last long. This is the reality.

This was me. I began looking at porn in high school and continued through and after college, 9 or 10 years, probably a good 5 years of which I would say I was addicted to it.

The only reason I was able to stop was God’s Grace. I haven’t looked at porn in about 8 or 9 years…I literally can’t remember the last time, but the images still haunt me.

Practically, what really helped was Confession. As often as possible. Also, it helped that my laptop started running slower so I never wanted to turn it on (this was before I owned a smart phone, I believe it would have been much harder to stop then)!

Make sure you’re spending time with people. The most devastating effect of porn is how it impacts your relationships. Take up fitness as a hobby; run or lift weights, and pretty soon you’ll care more about that than anything!

Praying for you.

I made a good and true heart-felt Confession, cleared my home of tempting books and other material, and said a firm goodbye to the wrong people in my life (I never saw them again). I closed the door on that part of my life and opened a new one, and have seldom looked back. I miss the companionship but not the dread of hell, not the guilt of crucifying Jesus, not the emptiness of a broken relationship with God. Only with the help of God’s grace I was able to make a decision and stick with it, breaking a decades-long addiction.
