Hey Guys! I’m new here! Well anyways, I was wondering what anyone thought about a lay member or the Church wearing a cassock for a Lenten Promise. I asked the Apologists, but didn’t get an answer.

Publically wearing a cassock when you’re not in orders (or in seminary awaiting orders) sounds like “impersonating a priest”?
I own and wear a cassock only when serving Mass, in which case I’m clearly taking the role of a lay server and most people know me and know I’m not a priest. I’d never walk around in one in regular life.

The cassock isn’t a symbol of religious devotion, its the uniform of the clergy (and altar servers when assisting at Mass) and for laity to wear it would be the religious equivalent of impersonating a police officer. Don’t do it, please.

Having some sort of outward sign that you are catholic is a good thing to do. The cassock in particular is a bad idea, but there are certainly other ways to show that you are catholic.

If you want an outward sign, I suggest a nice normal-sized crucifix around your neck. Remember that whatever you do for a lenten promise, penance, or contrition, it should not be something that says “look at me” or “look at how holy I am”

I was not trying to, or implying, that I was going to or that I wanted to impersonate clergy. The question just came up during a conversation with a friend and I didn’t know how to answer it. Thank you guys!
