While in RCIA class today the deacon mentioned that everybody has to go to first confession even if you haven’t been baptised a week or so before the vigil ceremony. I had always thought that your baptism erased all sins so that I would not have to do confession until after I was baptised? I am confused now…why do I have to confess sins if they are just going to be erased once I am baptised anyways?

This is also very confusing to me, since as I understand it, Baptism is the first Sacrament; it is not physically possible to receive any other Sacrament before that.

I would contact the deacon and ask for clarification. Obviously, an unbaptized person cannot receive the Absolution, but maybe he wants you to do a “practice run,” or else have the experience of doing an Examination of Conscience before your Baptism (which I think is a good idea, myself)? 🤷

If you have not been baptized, you cannot receive the Sacrament of Confession. They may want you to do a walk through, go into the confessional and just have a visit with Father so you are not as nervous when you DO make your first Confession.

Baptism erases ALL sin, both original and personal. Being baptized as an adult is like a “fast pass”, you get to skip confessing that usually embarrassing many many years worth of sins.
