If I study something and I really enjoy it, do I have to, or should I, take a break from it on Sundays?

Studying is a mental labor, which is not forbidden on Sunday. Only manual labor is forbidden.

Sundays are ‘little Easters’. They are days of joy. There is no ‘fasting’ or abstinence on Sundays–therefore you should not ‘deprive yourself’ on Sundays of something you like.

Now, if you like studying or reading something, and you want to deprive yourself of it on FRIDAY for your Friday penance, that would be another story! You don’t HAVE to. . .but you COULD!

The Church teaches that one should refrain from “unnecessary servile work” on Sunday. This means no unnecessary physical labor (the issue of enjoying physical work is not relevent). The positive side is that Sunday should be kept holy. Reading or studying is not servile so it is OK. Try to do something to deepen your spirituality. In short. Sunday is a time to renew your soul and your body.

You know what’s strange? My niece told my daughter that she could not go swimming on a Sunday. My niece is Mormon. I wonder why that is?
