Quiet before Mass

Do you get some or how much noise is there prior to Mass beginning?

I thank God I go to church where the parish says the Rosary before Mass ~ letting people know that socializing inside this church just prior to Mass should be done outside. I hope that helps.

Before Mass, a quiet murmur, a low hum. Not overly irritating but the noise of the Rosary group drowns it out for the most part. I’ve visited Parishes where there was full on chats and laughter before Mass so it’s not awful.

After Mass… well, it’s a free for all. People are chatting, laughing in the pews, walking around the sanctuary having chats about things. In fact, this pretty much starts just before the final blessing. During the announcements (where everybody else usually claps for someone’s unrelated achievement) people are already talking.

After Mass is what gets to me the most. Not 5 minutes ago were these people receiving the Lord. I usually stay 5 minutes after Mass to pray, thank God, collect my thoughts and offer up my week to Him. It’s near impossible when right next to me (even though I sit in the front pew) people are chatting.

Depends where I go.

When I attend the Latin Mass downtown, it’s very quiet.

When I attend my parish closer to home,
there’s a tendency to scattered low talking and music,
with an occasional loud weekend, up to and including
someone talking socially on a cell phone before Mass, and
a cell phone going off during, yes during, Mass.

Before and after, Mass in my parish can be as loud as bingo parlor. I’ve been to bars that exhibit more reverence toward the selection of beers on tap.

The Poll doesn’t spell out how long before Mass it refers to, which I think is important.

In our parish, there is a more-or-less quiet buzz up until ten minutes before the time, when a silence falls.

I think this is a good balance: long enough for people to catch up with poorly neighbours, ask how they are, ask for prayers and so on, then time to collect thoughts before Mass starts.

Very quiet. I go to the EF also and unless there is a rosary prayer going on the there is basically no talking other than the odd whisper to a child or something.

There’s quite a lot of talking, before and after the OF Mass in my parish. In contrast, there is complete silence in church at the EF Mass I attend in another parish, and talking is reserved for outside the church.

It depends on the church I am going to. Most OF there is some low to medium volume talking going but I went to one recently where the talking was louder, and you think you were at a party not Mass.

I wish I could go to EF more often as the only talking at one of the churches going on before Mass was some people reciting the Rosary & The Divine Mercy Chaplet before Mass, the other church for EF Mass I’ve been to was relatively quiet.

My parish is one of the largest in the diocese. There is very little talking before Mass–certainly not people carrying on ordinary conversations and ordinary volumes in the pews. But, it is a large church and the floors are mixed surfaces (main aisles are carpeted rest is stone) so there is definately sound. People walking, kneelers, children being wiggily, etc. But I never have too much trouble concentrating.

My parish has a sign on the entrance door, it says “please respect the sacred silence”. This does a nice job reminding people of where they are at and what the purpose is. Within 10 minutes of end of Mass, everyone is outside talking. I find the silence before Mass helps me to prepare for Mass.

The parish I currently attend is totally not quiet. It has so many families with children, which is a joy to behold.

So along with the territory comes the little sounds that kids make.

In some parishes I attend this is a real problem. In other’s not so much.
I think that if/when the pastor addresses it, it subsides for a while,
but after a few months it seems like most people “forget”.

I find myself a little more tolerant at a Sunday Mass, just because of the volume of people. My biggest problem is at the Daily Mass I attend. On the average there are between 50-80 people at the Daily Mass, and it is usually much louder than a Sunday Mass. People do not whisper, yell across the church to their friends coming in other doors, lots of people moving around…, it is very distracting for me because I take the bus to Mass, and arrive about 20 minutes early, specificaly for some “quiet time”.

This particular parish recites the Rosary after Mass though, and heaven help you if you make a sound while that is happening! I can’t usually stay, because I have to catch the bus to work, but one day I was driving and I ran into a Deacon friend of mine. He and I were talking in the back of Church, in a very low tone, and were “SHUSHED”, quite rudely, I might add, by a couple of people. 🤷

Oh, well, just something else to “offer up”! 😉

It’s pretty much dead pan quiet for me. I go to different churches for daily mass and Sunday mass. Across the board it is usually pretty silent except for the occasional whisper.

I wished I lived within travelling distance of the churches you go to…😃

I chose the option of some talking, some music. All at the same time. Meaning that people talk a bit louder over the music. I actually find the music distracting while I’m praying, so I try and get to church early, before the organist/pianist starts playing. The only church I’ve been to that is quiet before Mass is the one I go to for daily Mass while I’m at work. Nice and quiet before and after, except when the organist is there.

Music generally does not distract me. I am more distracted by the loud talking, and wish that people would keep it really low, or do their chit chat in a non sanctuary area. At this church I went over the weekend, it was loud & people quieted down only when the cantor announced the opening hymn.

I noticed something at Mass Sunday that really bothered me, and now I think I can put my finger on it.

I can block out the idle chit-chat & general background noise of most situations, I guess I’m lucky that way.😉

What I am finding that really irritates me is the people who don’t know when to be quiet,
and the rude and self-centered behaviors I see.
Before Mass started, as Sister was making some brief announcements,
people just continued to have their conversations,
and the noise got louder, because those that were talking now had to compete with Sister.
I’m sorry, ***but this is just plain rude!! ***

You see her come up to the ambo, say good morning to her, and then continue to talk to your neighbor until she says, “Now turn your hymnal to #612…” 🤷

I know that society has changed, but it seems to me that “good old-fashioned manners” are a thing of the past! :(:bighanky:
