Quinceanera mass?

I got invited to a quinceanera mass and I was wondering what kind of mass it is? I’ve seen videos on YouTube and it’s something that I haven’t seen. What is the order of that mass?

The one I attended was a normal Mass w/ a special blessing after the homily. I think it’s a great tradition.

Yes, it’s a regular Mass, but after the homily the girl and her parents come to the front of the church and Father blesses a small ring that she is given which is a symbol of her coming to maturity, in her life and her faith life as well.

There is usually a reception afterward and these can be quite elaborate and involve limousines, fancy venues, etc. It depends on the parents. I’ve seen very simple quinceneras and then ones with 10-15 “attendants” and escorts to go along with the young lady being honored.

Did you watch a Spanish Mass perhaps? It’s a Mexican custom.

The blessing can also be done after the Post-Communion prayer and before the final blessing. I’ve seen it done both ways.

The traditional blessing, part of the popular religion of Latinos and common in some countries of Central and South America and the Caribbean, has developed in the United States into an unofficial “liturgical rite” and is regulated in some dioceses with specific guidelines and norms.

There had been no approved Blessing for the Quinceañera and unapproved “rituals” of a variety of origins were in widespread use a number of U.S. dioceses. In the absence of a confirmed rite, celebrants often spontaneously created prayers and ritual actions. Since only approved and confirmed rites may be used in the Liturgy, an Order for the Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday was approved by the full body of U.S. Bishops and received the recognitio from the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. This is the Quinceañera ritual approved for use in the dioceses of the United States of America in 2007.
