I was going to make a thread asking what this painting from a church I sometimes attend depicted, as I did not recognize it. Then I realized the book I just bought about the church’s history probably had the answer in it, so I looked it up.

Just curious whether anyone else will recognize it right away?

Here’s two hints:

1. the outfits do not appear to me to be historically correct, though I’m no expert
2. this is part of a triptych hanging over the altar; the middle is Christ crucified and the right is Abraham getting stopped by an angel from killing Isaac.

I thought that too at first, but “Christ” being way outside some city raising something to the sky made no sense.

I’m glad that you posted this! It’s a famous work by Johannes Vermeer depicting King Hezekiah celebrating Thanksgiving with the Visigoths.

It also looks a lot like Byron Daratrazanoff’s Vlad the Impaler’s First Communion.
