I came across this story several weeks back, but have been unable to find it again. I’m wondering if anyone ever heard it and knows who it’s attributed to.
A priest was on his deathbed when the devil appeared to him. The priest commanded the devil to tell him the one thing that was most effective in keeping people from Hell. The devil thought about it and responded that it would be frequent Penance (as in the sacrament).

Sounds like a good idea. I was told by a priest to go to confession on either first Friday or Saturday of every month. Luckily, there is a parish that offers the sacrament of Penance every work day from 11:30 am to 12 noon as compared to the PALTRY 1/2 hour every Saturday offered by most parishes. So the sacrament of Penance, to me, is always available, especially for gaining indulgences.

A clean soul won’t go to hell.
