Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say “This is from God,” to traffic with it for miserable price! Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby – Surah 2:79

Muslims use this surah as their basis to prove the bible has been fabricated. Here are a few points to consider:
  • Yusuf Ali comments the immediate application of this is applied to the Jews living in Medina. If that is the case then it is only that party of Jews that have fabricated the scripture which has nothing to do with the other Jews living in other regions. This minor party cannot possibly fabricate ALL the scriptures that were in circulation. We have the manuscripts of the Old Testament predating the Jews in Medina that are in harmony with the Old Testament today.
  • Reading this verse in context it has nothing to do with the Christians and the New Testament. I can accept the fact the curse is upon anyone who changes the scripture universally speaking, but the charge in this surah is against the Jews not Christians. Using this verse as a charge against the Christians and the New Testament is not objective does not follow through.
 
Surah 2:79 is probably one of the preliminary arguments to justify for the basis of the introduction of the Quran. The rationale for the Quran is that all prior holy books have become adulterated and therefore unreliable to be used as content for the true message of Allah. Islam believes the prior holy books to be authentic God’s word in their original incorrupt form.

This is some of the problems with the assertion of Islam. Having said that, it does not refer to where, when and how the corruption took place. This leaves it to the people to assume that the corrupted parts of the older scriptures are when they do not confirm the Quran. This is of course the opposite of the process of giving evidence because it assumes that the Quran is true and the Bible is not instead of the other way round. One has to give proof that the older book is corrupted before claiming the new (the Quran) is not.
 
A good example of how the Quran dismisses the Bible as wrong is Surah 4:57.

“And for claiming that they killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of GOD. In fact, they never killed him, they never crucified him - they were made to think that they did. All factions who are disputing in this matter are full of doubt concerning this issue. They possess no knowledge; they only conjecture. For certain, they never killed him.”

The Quran believes that the crucifixion actually took place except that it was not Jesus who was crucified. “They were made to think that they did” (crucifying him). Now we are all in a wild goose chase of what actually happened during the crucifixion.

While I agree with you and Muslims make the point of using the Quran as the criteria to judge whether a passage or text has been fabricated, nevertheless they are faced with another problem:

So if you are in doubt, [O Muhammad], about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so never be among the doubters. – Surah 10:94

How could you appeal to the previous scripture for confirmation if the previous scripture is now corrupt?

TBH I have been unable to pass over this obstacle and it would be helpful if someone can explain the surah. Looking at it at face value, obviously around the seventh century during Mohammad’s time the uncorrupted scripture was still available that Allah asked Mohammad to consult those who ‘read the scripture’ before him if he is in doubt.

It does not say what scripture was that but looking at the geographic location of Arabia it is likely that would be the Bible.

What is interesting, the Bible of the seventh century is the Bible we use today and has not changed since then. Unless the Quran means the Gnostic Gospels which is likely because some verses in the Quran seems to be plucked right out of such Gospels. If that is true then the Gnostic Gospels are revealed by Allah as the Quran says. But then this still does not cover the Torah which differs substantially from the Quran.
