Just heard the news. I’m in shock, it’s obvious. The Gunny just passed away. My heart is with all of us who loved him.

I wish this video was better, but I wanted you to hear it direct from me, instead of just some news article. It was an honor to shoot with R Lee, and I cherish the time I had on this earth with him.

Hope to see you again, Gunny.

I cherish these:

Yikes, I loved R. Lee Ermey on the TV, but I can’t imagine having him for my father.
My father was a very soft-spoken and frequently silent guy.

Ermey, even as a real drill sergeant, was playing a role. Lots of people are good at playing roles for their job. Ermey seemed like a more easy going man in interviews.

R, Lee Ermey is famous for the movie Full Metal Jacket, but he also starred in the movie, Firebase Gloria. This was the true story of the Marine outpost in Vietnam, which got overrun, but the Marines managed to hang on.

Also, his tv program “Mail Call,” was very informative.

He has advanced
Into this night of shadows, one
In this alluring shroud of blackness, fast
Through which one filament of light does pass
A single silver thread of life
Now broken by the pains of birth
Now banished from the light of earth
That once tied him to his father sun
And to his drifting mother moon
Floating on the cosmic breath of dawn
Until all ties to earth were gone
And fled this painful birth on waves
Across a sea of time that marked his days
But no longer does a tally keep
For there is no time, for now he sleeps
And dreams those dreams so intertwined
With the gentle fading of his mind
Which passed into the depths of peace
Where all struggles finally cease
Where shadows dance in loose embrace
To reverence this,
His solitary, hallowed place
