I know racism is wrong and i am pretty sure it is a mortal sin. I sometimes have thoughts that are racist that come into my head, but I try to ignore these thoughts and get them out of my head when they happen. Is this a sin to have these thoughts?

No.

1641 At adoration during the Forty-Hours’ Devotion, the Lord said to me, My daughter, write that involuntary offenses of souls do not hinder My love for them or prevent Me from uniting Myself with them. But voluntary offenses, even the smallest, obstruct My graces, and I cannot lavish My gifts on such souls.

Jesus Christ to St. Faustina.

If you’re doing all you can to get them out of your head, then you have not committed mortal sin. The fact that you try not to have these thoughts bestows Actual Grace and is showing Charity for the Lord and His children.

I’ll be praying for you!

You can’t prevent the birds from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building a nest in your hair.

(I’ve seen that quote attributed to several different people, so I’m not going to attribute it, except to say that it’s not original with me.)

I’m glad to know that.

You might try to get rid of those thoughts by learning more about Catholics of the disfavored race that you admire and spending time with them. Some black Catholic saints include St. Josephine Bakhita and St. Martin of Porres. Augustine Tolton is under consideration for sainthood. Cardinal François-Xavier Nguyễn Văn Thuận is a Vietnamese Catholic under consideration.
