I just wanted to share some happy news that I just received. I just spoke to the Pastor of my Parish and he is going to sign the petition for a radical sanation for my marriage! That means that soon enough (God willing), I will be able to recieve the Eucharist!! A Priest at Canon Law in my Diocese said my case looks easy enough to be granted the radical sanation, so my marriage is going to be Sacramental (finally!) 😃

Has anyone here sanated their marriage this way? If you have, could you share your story? What happened that you had to resort to this? How has this changed your life (other than the fact that the marriage is now sacramental)?

I want to thank all of the members helped me through this by giving me information on how to do this. I finally feel I’ll be at peace and won’t feel my marriage is wrong any more. 👍

I think I got my Christmas gift already because these were GREAT news to me. Just hope the process doesn’t take long and most important of all, that the Bishop grants me the sanation… :gopray2:

It might be helpful if you explain what “Radical Sanation” is.

Having an invalid marriage blessed without the exchange of vows before a priest. In my brother’s situation he is married by justice of the peace to a non-Catholic woman who hates everything “Catholic”. She absolutely refuses to have their marriage convalidated.

They have been together for seven years and have a daughter together. My brother is attending Mass and supporting the parish- he has long desired to have the marriage convalidated- yet unable due to his wife’s refusal.

My brother can obtain what is called a “Radical Sanation” which has the marriage “Sacramentalized” without the wife exchange vows before the priest- she does not even have to know about it.

I wonder why there are priests who do not know what radical sanation is?

Most likely they do however it is never to be offered as an alternative to convalidation. In other words it is very rare for it to happen and it should remain that way.

What it is is a dispensation from following the canonical form "act of healing or curing. In marriage, Radical snation, “a healing at the root” “involves a dispensation from the canonical form if it had not been observed, as well as a referral back to the past of the canonical effects.”

We had a Radical Sanation. It took a little over a month. Both my husband and I had to get two witnesses to fill out paperwork saying neither of us had been married before and that both of us where baptized. My husband (the Catholic) had to sign something that said he agreed to raise the children Catholic (or at least try). And then we just waited.

Why did we resort to this???

Well, it was very important to me that we wait until marriage to “be together” Which we did. Later my husband finds out that our marriage wasn’t valid, (not done in a Catholic Church) and we had been living in sin for the last two years. This upset me greatly. (since it was so important to me that we not live in sin before marriage) My husband did some research and discovered that the Radical Sanation is more or less a retroactive dispensation, that would pretty much say we, in fact, had not been living in sin the last two years. So, I was all for it. My husband lovingly waited (living as brother and sister) for the process to be complete and we have been living happily as husband and wife ever since.

(at the time, there was no way I would have agreed to a convalidation because to me that would have been acknowledging that we had been living in sin. So the Radical Sanation was the only option my husband had to make things right)

Anyway… hoped this help in some way or another. Let me know if there is something else you would like to know about our experience.

God Bless,

RyanL’s Wife

Please you for your reply. I do know what it is and when I mentioned it to my pastor he said that I did not qualify because the form was wrong, i.e. marrying out of the church. But unless I read canon law incorrectly, this is not the case. Any further suggestions appreciated.

Contact your local Diocese. Ask for Canon Law and they will help you there. They will send the request to your pastor and he will then have to submit it for you. That’s how I did it. My pastor didn’t know what to tell me about it, he told me just to convalidate (my husband refuses to do it). He told me to call the Canon Law office at the diocese and they sent the paperwork to the pastor. After he received these, he told me he will sign the petition (he knows I married outside our church). I think he wasn’t too sure of how to go with the process.

Just call Canon Law. They are very helpful. Ask for a priest who handles marriages, explain why you need a radical sanation, why you maried outside the CC, why your spouse won’t convalidate. They’ll understand. As soon as I told the priest my husband was a JW, he asked no more questions. He said he’ll be sending the papers to my parish. He also mentioned that this is a fairly easy process and it shouldn’t be difficult to be granted.

Maybe the pastor told you it was wrong because he has no knowledge on this matter or maybe he rather do it through a ceremony. Most priests try to do a ceremony, but all cases are different. Many people cannot go w/the ceremony (I, for example).

Hope this helps.

I think they do know but wish to discourage it. See a Priest usually has one of many directives to prepare marriage candidates, as the Radical Sanate goes around that practice (it is post marriage not pre-marriage) the Priests seem to discourage this, however in many cases the Priest go too far. Call the diocese marriage ministry and ask (or beg) for help.

I have to agree…but I question if the Priests go to far…IMHO it is kinda sneeky to do this behind a spouses back without a really good reason (as some have posted here)…hence the Priests really prefers to have both parties understand the process and accept that this needs to be done (convalidation)

I had mine convalidated via Radical Sanation last year. We had been married by a justice of the peace 17 years ago, I was far away from the faith at that time & did not realize what needed to be done, until I had a rebirth in the Faith. It took me a little time to get it all together, I spoke to the Msgr at the tribunal, who directed my to my Pastor. My Pastor knew nothing about “RS”, but was willing to help, as he called it a learning experience. He also spoke to the Msgr at the tribunal (at one point, he was stuck on a definition & I was afraid he would be unwilling to put in the petition) & all was cool. About 1 month after putting in the paperwork, our Sanation request was granted by the Bishop. IM me if you have any further questions re: my experience. Good luck & God Bless you.

It does not matter what form it was to begin with. If your pastor will not help you then you should call the Diocese. If they won’t help you then call the St. Joseph Foundation.

Again, this sort of thing is rare- and only used in such cases as my brother to where the wife absolutely refuses to exchange vows before a priest and agree to raise the children Catholic. They have been “together” for 7 years now and the only thing “required” for the Sanation is that it is made known via my brother to the priest that she has the absolute intention of remaining in the marriage.
