Do you believe that rainbows did not occur until after the biblical flood account?

Yes
No
Never think about it really
Don’t care, does not matter
Other- please explain

No.

Let’s be real, here…there was water before the supposed Noah and his ark? Yes?
Of course there was. Without water, humans would not exist.
So, therefore, there were rainbows.

-from wikipedia:
A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth’s atmosphere. They take the form of a multicolored arc, with red on the outer part of the arc and violet on the inner section of the arc.

A rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colors; the distinct bands are an artifact of human color vision. The most commonly cited and remembered sequence, in English, is Newton’s sevenfold red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (popularly memorized by mnemonics like Roy G. Biv). Rainbows can be caused by other forms of water than rain, including mist, spray, and dew.

I’ve come to hate rainbows. I always think there’s a gay pride parade coming when I see them. I expect to see Elton John, men dressed like Marilyn Monroe and a chorus of “It’s Raining Men.” No rainbow talk! 😛

Also, Strawberry, why didn’t you make a poll for your inquiry? They’re easy to make?

No I don’t, the passage about “rainbows” is myth. Rainbows occur when light passes through surfaces of clear objects that are shaped in such a way to refract the light into the various colors of the spectrum.

Even if as some literalists believe it had not yet rained upon the earth…rainbows occur in water falls or waves as they crash upon the rocks and the mists catch the light…sometimes there are “rainbows” around the sun when there are ice crystals in the high atmosphere.

You are right, polls should be easy to make. I was talking on the phone while typing and did not bother to look for the symbol to click for doing polls.

I once heard a supposition that before the flood, the whole world was enshrouded in mist so that a large portion of terrestrial water was in the atmosphere. It continues that for the flood to occur, the whole of the mist precipitated (more or less) simultaneously.

The natural conclusion from this supposition is that there could have been no surface rainbows before the flood since direct sunlight did not reach the surface.

NOTE: I do not hold to this particular supposition myself and will not be defending it. Please handle minority opinions respectfully. 🙂

I never thought about the poll question explicitly before today but will answer “no.” I’ll offer a caveat that though Noah and his family may have seen rainbows before, this one accompanied God’s promise to not destroy the world in water again. Thus, it was significant.

No, I don’t believe that they did not occur… wait, what? Is this some sort of double negative grammar trick? 😉

Seems cool by me.

And here is a ROYGBIV rainbow made from emoticons for the occasion:

😊:):D;)👍😦

There were no *natural *rainbows before the flood, because there was no natural rainfall. As suncatcher pointed out, the Bible says that a mist watered the ground instead of rain. But if Noah as a child had gotten out a garden hose he could have made a *bappow *in his back yard: youtube.com/watch?v=lTUcyTmC4Fw

There was no global flood. There is zero evidence for such an event and it would be impossible as it is described in Genesis. There probably was some sort of regional flood that gave rise to the Noah mythology, there may have even been an actual Noah. But, the Genesis account as far as the size of the ark, the number of animals, the length of the flood, etc. would be utterly impossible. It’s an allegorical tale.

So what you’re saying… is that there are things that are impossible for God?

🙂

If I believe the flood really happened then I must believe rainbows did NOT exist prior to the flood, as the rainbow was created as a reminder of God’s promise to NOT destroy the earth in such a way again.

Therefore, I believe it was after the flood that God created the rainbow.

And I think this is quite telling:
A rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colors; the distinct bands are an artifact of human color vision.

🙂 What a unique way to seal a promise!

No, not at all. God can do anything he wishes. However, Genesis describes in great detail how the flood happened and how all the animals were saved. Based on the details given the story as told cannot be true unless God did other things not mentioned (like shrinking all the animals down to miniatures and putting them in suspended animation). Also, where is the geological evidence?, where did the water go?, etc. Flood never happened.

I’ve always believed the evidence of a so called ‘ice age’ is actually evidence of the flood being misinterpreted… but that’s just me.

How about if God Himself assisted in the making of the Ark, so that it was indeed large enough to carry two of each species that then existed (actually, have you seen a pyramid? Stonehedge? Ancient man was fully capable of creating great structures, so why not a great Ark? We don’t know how long it took Noah to build the Ark do we?). Creatures that survive in water need not have applied for entry. 😉 And animals of the air could have easily perched on the roof (although clearly some were kept in cages).

Anything IS possible with God, so why limit Him? Not all the stories in the Bible are completely fleshed out, we are only given so much as He felt we needed and no more…

I’m not saying you have to believe, just that maybe you could be a bit gentler towards that do choose to believe that even a global flooding is possible when God is involved.

I don’t mean to come off as arrogant. I apologize. If someone wants to believe this based on nothing but faith, no problem here. I just wanted to make the point that it flies in the face of the evidence and modern science. It’s almost like saying the earth is flat in my opinion. But I’m a science guy so evidence and reason are very important to me. But, I have no problem with those who wish to believe in that Genesis is historical

Flood never happened.
something happened…

Matthew 24:38-39 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

2 Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

I hope I did not come across as trying to set a trap or egar to pounce on anyone holding a differing opinion, no matter the size of it.

And, I do thank you for the time you put into your answer. It certainly does give me more information than I had before.
