Okay, thanks, both of you, for the clarification. I wonder if the priest would first ask the person wearing the sash whether or not they were being on the up-and-up with their Catholic faith. Like, maybe someone unbeknowing sees a rainbow sash at the mall and thinks it’s just a new fashion accessory. I’ve seen this happen with those male earrings in the 90s. Some men were getting a piercing in their left ear, not realizing that it was a gay statement.
It was the right ear that meant you were gay, and the left ear was for straight men.

I supposed that could be the case: in much the same way as a black pastor should ask a person entering their church wearing Klansman’s robes if they are really Klansmen or just happen to think white robes are a new fashion.

You know what? It had not occured to me to worry about rainbow sashes. I do worry about some Senator or other (one who is a well known culture of death champion, with an axe to grind, maybe with a camera person in tow) presenting themselves for communion… wouldn’t it be just as wrong to act as if nothing is wrong and serve them??

Brendan, I would think just about every one in the U.S. knows what a klans robe looks like and represents. A rainbow sash is not (yet, at least) on the same level as a klans robe. I had never heard of it until this thread. No one around me knew about it either. I could see the rainbow sash being sold as a trendy accessory in stores and people buying them because it looks fashionable, not knowing the supposed gay meaning behind them.

Lyell, my state’s governor campaigned as a Catholic, yet she is for abortion rights. I remember there being a big stink about how she still received communion from her priest. I don’t know whatever came of it. I googled to see if I could find out what happened in this situation. I didn’t see anything that was current. This quote is from 2004:

“Bishop Mengeling now has officially told the media that he will DO NOTHING to discipline [Michigan Governor Jennifer] Granholm or any other pro-abortion Catholic politician. This is most distressing… Bishop Mengeling’s primary reasons for not disciplining pro-abortion Catholic politicians is that the Church must treat people like adults, not children and that the Church can’t judge anyone — only God can!!”

I find it strange that each Catholic church can have different rules about communion.

I really don’t see how a priest can refuse communion to someone because of a sash, yet give communion to others who internally aren’t living the life of a faithful Catholic.
It is the ones that are wearing the sash that are in error. The fact they go in groups to make a political statement againest Church teachings, signifiying that intent by wearing the sash, it is they that they are doing it out of contempt to the teachings. Thier hearts are not in the right place.

This, a quote from thier own statement" “These so-called spiritual leaders preach about Christ-Consciousness, but have no clue what it means in reality.” truly reflects they don’t get it. The term “Christ-consciouness” is right out of New Age/New thought teaching, not Church teaching.

Beware of the Rainbow.

It’s very simple really. If someone makes it obvious that they are in opposition to the Catholic faith (and wearing such a sash would indeed be a public profession of that opposition), then they are openly professing that they are practicing a sinful lifestyle and scandalously flaunting it as well, so, rather than risk sacrilege, the priest can and should refuse them communion.

In the case that you have mentioned, unless the priest knows something is awry with the person, he cannot make that judgment There’s a big difference…

Then again even if rainbow sash, KKK, or politicians or whoever partake. Gods still all over it no matter what we decide or dont decide in the churches.

*Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

1 Corinthians 11: 27-29*

Its a slippery slope for the rainbow sash. All its about is demanding to God that they are not in sin by openly challanging Him. In this and the marriage issue. And they claim to be agenda free. 😉

Fortunately, there were no rainbow sashers at my Mass this morning…but, I realize that in order to maximize their effect, they’re probably targeting the cathedrals where cardinals and archbishops say Masses. Any reports yet of this happening this year?

If you are not the priest you have no obligation at all in such a situation except to go on reverently participating in the Mass. Only the priest has the right and duty to make a judgement in such a situation.
We would be expected to support the priest, and do whatever he needed us to do. If the people wearing the sashes were being disruptive, they may need to be escorted out- that is part of what ushers are for.

so did anyone have rainbow sashes at mass? how’d it go?

i was unable to attend sunday, so i missed it. my parish is a conservative one, but smack dab in the middle of a really liberal town… i wish i knew what happened.

:amen: and we would be remiss ourselves, not to mention exposing them to actual harm, if we give it to people when we have serious and reasonable doubts about their worthiness.

Paul speaks of people becoming physically seriously ill due to unworthily receiving the Eucharist. So we believe it is that powerful and has that much potential for harm as well as good.

So, what are our obligations here? I doubt that any of these folks will show up at my particular parish, but I’m quite sure at least some of them will show up at either the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception or St. Matthew’s Cathedral–the hub of the Archdiocese of Washington. Are we supposed to sit on our hands, or simply pray, while these folks go up for Communion? What if the priest willingly–or ignorantly–gives them Communion? What if they decide to make a scene a la St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York a few years back?
Montanaman, tgell me, if you saw a child being abused and beaten and kicked and degraded would you sit on your hands and pray? Well think how you would respond.
It is not the homosexual inclination that is the problem, it is the actual activity. These people (Rainbow Sash) are saying that they intend to continue to live the sexual lifestyle which they want and receive the precious body and blood of the Lord.
You see if they werent trying to regularise their lifestyle the coloured sash wouldnt be necessary. They are saying “we will do as we want and still we receive” Sorry Not ON>
Montanaman, its up to you. I know if it was in my parish I certainly would act. I could not stand by and watch the body of the Lord desecrated again.
Grace Angel.

I agree GraceAngel. This isn’t any ordinary sin we’re talking about, but desecration of the Eucharist. The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord.

I don’t give a stuff what the Bishop may have said to do or not do, or what the priests or even EHMCs do or don’t do, I as a follower of Christ would not be able to face him at the Pearly Gates knowing that I could’ve prevented sacrilege to the Eucharist and didn’t. That goes for any situation where I see anyone abusing the Eucharist.

Lily, we just need to try and do something even if we cant win.
If we were standing in the presence of the physical Jesus when he was here on earth, would be do nothing. Or are we still found to be sleeping? thats what we have to ask.
God Bless
grace Angel.
