Why don’t rainbows, the sign of God’s covenant with Noah, appear much in Classical Church architecture, or even Catholic art? Throughout the history of the Church, rainbows aren’t depicted much and I am wondering why.
 
Too late now.
Rainbows are a sign of homosexualty.
The homosexuals have stolen an innocent, fun, beautiful symbol of God’s creation and use it for all things homosexual. Never to be regained for our children.
Lost for ever.
Whenever someone to day sees a rainbow they will think homosexualty.
How sad is that?

40 years ago they stole the innocent word “gay”, and the meaning was never the same since.
 
Unfortunately, they’re not as common as they could be nowadays, possibly because of rainbows’ association with gay rights, but they’re actually not absent from older art. Same thing’s probably true with both pyramids and disembodied eyes, both of which are really ancient Christian symbols that were co-opted by Freemasons. It’s too bad, because they’re good symbols for the Trinity and for God, respectively. It would be nice if we could take back what’s ours, but it would probably only confuse people.

It is a huge shame that the beautiful sign that God gave us has been stolen by the homosexual community. Can you imagine how Noah and his family must have felt when seeing a rainbow for the first time? And now it will never be the same. I have wanted to knit a rainbow afghan for years, but can’t now, as I’d be knitting it over the summer at camp. Can’t do.

How very sad.

Why be content with letting the homosexual community solely define the symbolism of the rainbow. Take it back. Knit a rainbow afghan anyway and tell of God’s promise to Noah to those who inquire.

Right. The story of Noah is thousands of years old. And it will still be told for thousands years more (or whenever Jesus comes back ;)). The gay rights movement is but a recent blip on the historical radar screen. I refuse to believe that the symbol is forever lost. Sure, many if not most people at the present moment in time (in certain countries at least) think of the rainbow in connection with homosexuality rather than Scripture. But that doesn’t mean it can’t or won’t change. The Bible will outlast all such social movements.

Sarcelle, I never thought of it that way! All I could think about would be people walking by and seeing the rainbow and thinking the worst. Here is a great opportunity to witness to the people we serve during the summer. As Camp Hosts we do come in contact with a lot of folks.

Thank you for your wonderful suggestion. Now my happy dream of this lovely afghan will come to fruition.

The circular rainbow around God’s throne, and around God in “the likeness of the appearance of a man” is from Ezekiel and from Revelation, although it does refer to the rainbow sign of the covenant with Noah. You will often see this circle.

Ezekiel 1:28 –

“As the appearance of the rainbow when it is in a cloud on a rainy day: this was the appearance of the brightness round about.”

Revelation 4:2-3 –

“…Behold, there was a throne set in heaven, and upon the throne one sitting. And he that sat, was to the sight like the jasper and the sard stone; and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”

Umm no I still just think its a rainbow because that’s what it is.

It’s because classical Church architecture and art were designed to tell stories. Before the era of the mass printing press, most people would learn their Bible stories from the Church’s architecture and art. Rainbows dont tell much of a story.
 
I live high up in the kerry mountains here in Ireland; land of rainbows! Actually the gay flag is an imperfect rainbow with one stripe missing… last time I said that here I got a lecture on why! Something to do with how the flag drapes but that was irrelevant. I see tourists enraptured watching rainbows dancing in the sky… and knit Irish rainbow hats for little ones,

Green=new life plus God’s beauty that surrounds us. Symbolizes the ordinary times of the Church year.
Blue= loyalty, our commitments to God and His people, Truth, justice, and the waters of our Baptism.
Purple=dying and rising again along with the sufferings of Christ
Yellow and orange= warmth, life, promise reminding us of the love of God’s Son in our lives, the light of a candle, the rays of the sun, and the changing seasons.
Red= celebration, joy, and Confirmation. Symbolizing feast days within the Church, Christmas Day and Pentecost.
