Raised from the dead

People were raised from the dead in the bible. Why aren’t they raised from the dead now? Shouldn’t the same be able to take place in the present day? Just as a healing would? If it is asked in faith and believing shouldn’t it happen? Why would things be different now than how they were then?

People are raised from the dead today, but it doesn’t make the news. This occurs often in hospitals when someone is clinically dead but miraculously comes back to life and the doctors cannot explain it. Same thing when doctors don’t see how someone will survive a disease like cancer, and down the road the cancer is either gone or the person lives long beyond the time the science predicted.

One thought is that there is an appointed time when the resurrection will take place:

John 5:28-29
“Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which **all **that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the **resurrection **of life; and they that have done evil, unto the **resurrection **of damnation.”

When Jesus rose from the dead He gave all of humanity a hope in a resurrection to everlasting life. Those who were resurrected prior to Jesus was a foreshadowing of what Jesus would later accomplish with an infinitely greater outcome. Jesus fulfilled all of the Old Testament promises in Himself. So if we, as Christians, know that Christ rose from the dead then we should not be looking for something lesser to give us the hope that we might seek. Things have to be different since our post-resurrection hope is different now. Miracles will always occur for the clarity of our vision of God but these are done in His will and in His time.

Usually in the 3rd world countries you will find many more cases where people are raised from the dead. I personally think that it is more common there because people in 3rd world countries tend to be much stronger in their faith than many of us in America where we don’t seem to “need” God because we have so much opportunity to prosper, in other words we are spoiled. But in some places in this world people really have to struggle and they depend on God so much because their Faith is all they have. People like that see many more miracles then we do.

What about the ones that were brought back from the grave? Can that happen still? Has it?

I would say that is more rare, but I would not discount it (esp in 3rd world countries, as COP said)

The raising of the dead by Jesus, Peter, and Paul, in my view, were necessary as signs that the New Covenant was a reality. It was necessary for the growth of the New Church, in other words.

Now that the Church is established, these signs aren’t as necessary for others to believe. In my opinion, if these signed are what it takes for others to believe, than their faith will tend to be shallow, to stagnate when these signs lessen and bloom when these signs increase.

Hence, I hold to what Jesus said to Thomas, “You believe because you have seen? Blessed are they who haven’t seen and still believe”!!!

And, not to belabor the point, look to the Israelites in the desert in Exodus to see how deep is a faith that looked to miracles to uphold the faith. They witnessed some of the most spectacular miracles God ever publicly displayed, and they resorted to grumbling within mere days of the events… repeatedly!
