Ramadan Fast Can Be Excused Thru Monetary Fine?

Ok folks, I just learned something from a Shiite Muslim today. According to him, Muslims can be excused from fasting by paying a fine to their imam. The imam will set the price and the fine will be used to pay the poor. Well, helping the poor is a good thing, but how much of that money actually goes to the poor? I haven’t heard of such a thing.

I’ve never heard of that also, but then again, I don’t claim to know everything about islam.

Mugen, You’re friend has been misinformed or is confused about the rulings surrounding fasting. In Islam there is something called a Kaffarah (atoning sacrifice). When a person misses a fast during the month of Ramadan, he/she can atone for it in one of 3 ways.

Intentionally missing the fast without any reasonable justification i.e. health issues is a sin. the Kaffarah is meant to atone for that sin and the expectation is for the person not to repeat the sin.

I’m under the impression the Kaffarah is is a duty for every day of missed fast but I’m not 100% sure about this. Here is the ruling for missing a fast.

Kaffarah for Fast

1. • The Kaffarah of leaving out a fast of Ramadhan is to:

(a) free a slave, or (b) fast for two months or (c) feed sixty poor to their fill or give one mudd (= 3/4 kg.) of food-stuff, like wheat or barley or bread etc. to each of them. And if it is not possible for him to fulfil any of these, he should give in charity according to his means and seek Divine forgiveness. And the obligatory precaution is that he should give Kaffarah as and when he is capable to do so.

shia explained it very well,even sunnis believe the same…nothing is given to the imam,the only given rule is to feed the poor(from what i know 60 persons 2 times in a day)
