What could the police do? If you didnt know exactly where it came from, how would the police even know where to look?

Around here, on certain holidays, like memorial day, July 4th, New years, etc, it is common to hear gunshots at night, Ive never heard of anyone calling police about it though, not even sure why they would in the first place. the firing of guns has been a fairly common practice on certain holidays going back to the countries founding!

Also, some fireworks sound quite a bit like guns from the distance.

Fireworks as well as gunshots are illegal around here, but it happens all the time anyhow. There’s really nothing to be done. Just keep your head down.🤷

I used to live in a bad area of a large city. There were lots of gangs and I would call if they were near my house. Especially if it was like machine gun fire or multiple shots. The gang fights were worse during the summer. A lot of times gunshots would be heard nightly. We had fruit orchards around, canals and undeveloped land where a lot of gang activity took place as well as the streets. If you feel it is close to where you live I would call. If it sounds far away I wouldn’t bother.

I heard in some cities, they are putting up systems that can triangulate the location of gunshots and send the info to the police. I think I heard they are putting one in Atlantic City. A blackjack dealer told me it is like a war zone there at night.

You don’t say if you are in a rural area or not. Could the gun shots just be practice? I take a rifle out into the woods for target practice occasionally. Also if it’s hunting season, it’s not uncommon to hear shotgun blasts. So no, for us here, we would not call the police when we hear a gunshot.

Peace,
John

A few years ago, a couple days after New Years eve, I heard what sounded like five shots, coming from the northwest, not too far.

So I called and reported it, and that it sounded like five shots and about how fast they came.

I told them I did not want an officer to visit me but was just offering the information.

Turns out they were gunshots, which were unusual.

I’d do it again if it happened again.

It depends on where you are. I live in a rural area. If I called the police every time I heard gunshots, I’d be on the phone with them an awful lot… many hunters, and also farmers shooting vermin on their properties.

^^^This. Plus, one of my neighbors has his own outdoor shooting range. Gunfire in the 'hood is a common occurrence around here, and it’s harmless. Living in the city is a different story.
